This of course came back to bite me in the ass at our third anniversary when something akin to Theseus' "antique, flawless, plaitnum-band-with-numerous-smaller-stones" concept arose, and was doubly painful in that (1) employed income greatly exceeded student income, and (2) without the time pressure of a looming engagement or the "surprise" factor of the ring, she was let loose on finding her own perfect desire. The one saving grace was that she has smaller hands and doesn't like garish jewelry (what she considers garish) and so was content with a smaller stone that I had initially feared.
