Excellent....that'll get their attention, and in the meantime, has anybody figured out yet if that "sever the iron and rebuild the road in one turn" trick works?

Theseus- fear not, for this was also taken care of- an empty vet is taking the lead, making sure any unexpected attention we get won't get in our way.

        That's good planning guys.
For those of us who couldn't keep up during the weekend: how many units are we talking about, and where do we expect to land in two turns?

Shiber, I was under the impression of using 5 pikes + 5 MIs on boat, and whatever we can spare on knights over land... probably some 8-10 knights. That makes nearly 20 units for Valencia.

If after that, we don't use the galleys to do more damage to the South, but move them North instead, we can surprise them (hopefully). I don't want to go after the South before we land North, GoW will think we'll do one thing at a time. If instead we invade GoW while the South is not totally secure, there is a big chance GoW and ND won't see the invasion coming before it it too late.

There has been a lot of talk about us creating a beach head on Bob, while in reality a beach head is not that important to us. We have enough boats to be able to land a big enough force in one turn, without the need of a city first to unload stealthly in. So let's exploit that... if we first take the South, and only then start to invade the North, GoW will see it coming. The faster we get to the North, the better.

The main problem I see with the plan I outlined above is that it would be very simple for GoW to deny us all landing spots. This could be helped by having 8 galleys loaded, and 6 on standby to chain, moving the whole of them one tile to their core. In that case, they will likely try to block the hill ridge instead of the flats, meaning their riders are out of movement the first turn, and we can unload like we want to without fear of counter attack on turn 1. Ideally, we want to unload next to a city, so that we can take it the next turn, not unloading more safely on hills 2 turns away from the first city.

I hope that they think that us unloading troops on flats is not 'smart', while we have to anticipate us unloading at an unsafe place, but with enough units that can be destroyed at the first attack but don't cost us much. If the don't think our forces can unload more then twice the number of galleys they see, we've won the invasion.

BTW, how many galleys would GoW thinkwe have? they should now we have some 6 galleys used for Inchon, and some 3 for Inchoff... we could have built more in the mean time, but some of these could be down South, as a ferry service. Maybe it's best to drop some hints to our 'small' navy (like e.g. mentioning that we could not have attacked them, but had trouble enough defending what new cities we had on RP because only a limited number of troops were on Bob at the time, implying that we had few galleys to ferry, and are still ferrying units right now).

Wow... I had more to drink then I thought with my parents. If any of the above is not clear, please let me know. I know the spelling is horrible, but if the intention is fuzzy as well, I'll correct tomorrow morning (now is not a good time )

Yes yes! Excellent, DeepO! And good points re: landing in the flats! So long as we have some knights in the neighborhood to help inflict pain on the enemy IF they hit us in the flats, I think that is PERFECT!

And then, as you say, move those puppies northward so we can get ready to chain LOTS of troops onto GoW turf!

                Friggin' awesome.

Anybody have a thoughts on attacking ND across the eastern hills?

I'm positive it does. The game is constantly updating the trade nets, that is one reason for slow down late in games with huge maps.

So. Start turn, 1 iron going to Spain. That would be the one iron by Hurricane. All others have been cut in previous turns, depriving us of iron and allowing the hordes to be produced.

Sever road on grass. Trade net is recalculated and trades cancelled. The iron is available in our cities.

2 workers rebuild road. We reinitiate trade with Spain, sending them Luxes. We keep the iron out of it.

I have done things similar to this many times.

Outstanding, NYE! Now....will a lack of Iron from us cripple RP? Don't wanna leave them out in the cold while they bulk up....but otherwise, I'd say we're ready to rock!

And Theseus.... I can't WAIT to send our screaming hordes across the eastern hills....I worry though, that with a strike force massing southward, and attention paid to getting a force to go GoW hunting, will we be able to field a credible number in the short run? After we get the GoW force in place and on the march, I believe threatening ND direct should be our very next goal, absotively!

It works definitely. In one of my PBEM games I had a pike and 3 industrious workers on a hill with iron (all other sources being cut). I built horsemen in my 30/x shield cities and spearmen in my 20/x shield cities and whenever I had a chunk of them, let the workers build the road, upgrade and let the pike pillage the road again.

Theseus, have you been at home about 4 hours ago? I was on a walk and had my mobile phone with me and I thought for a while if I should give you a call. Then hesitated though, because I was slightly drunk. Well... forget that 'slightly'.

                        hehe... I hear you SR

now who had the most drinks of us both: you're answering the question whether you can pillage and rebuild your own iron source, but I thought the question was if we could do that to RP to: have RP take our last iron source, and when we need it, pillage the road to RP, getting back iron, and rebuild the road to RP again. It is slightly different from your example in that it involves another civ, meaning a trade. If it really does recalc the tradenet like nye says it is a beautyfull tactic we can use to avoid having to rebuild roads on mountains. We could manage with only 2 workers instead of needing 5...
