  • Objectives of the Germano-Roman Great War

    Basis:
    The 1305 ad *seti* save

    Assumptions:
Seti is used to rush the Palace move to Macross City.
Ferropolis is set up as an Army building site.
We fight the current war with limited resupply.

    Discussion:
Civ3 big picture strategy is best thought of as a pendulum that oscillates between warfare and building. As such, the objectives of each agressive oscillation is to secure the staging ground, or jumping off point for the next agresive oscillation. With that in mind lets examine the two theatres of operation.

    Northern Front or German Theatre:
Hamburg,Stuttgart, and Hannover have already yielded to the yellow-jackets of Apolytonia. Cologne was razed by the allied green-shirts of Greece. Looking forward, the key to the next oscillation is capturing Koningsburg and scecuring the former Cologne city site with one of our settlers. This gives us surface against all remaining participants in Abananaba Major, and constitutes our minimal objectives for staging the next oscillation.

    Southern Front or Roman Theatre:
Brundesium in now sporting yellow togs. Syracuse will undoubtedly fall next turn (1310) and we should slip a settler to secure the former Vladistok city site. This new city will provide a site for our Artillery to shell Ravenna to hasten it's capture. This gives us surface against all remaining participants in Abananaba Minor, and constitutes our minimal objectives for staging the next oscillation.

Naturally, we will continue to press in both theatres until our alliances and pacts expire, but our focus should be on the above objectives.

I expect that the infrastructure and war material needs for the next oscillation will be met around 1450 ab or so, and the entire continent should be ours by about 1500 ab.

That's all well and good, Roadcage, But What do we really want in the way of Objectives for Rome (and the Southern Continant)?

We went to War against Germany, with 3 main Objectives in mind:
    1) Remove Germany from the Tech Lead and make them completely incapable of challenging our Technological superiority again - Obchieved

    2) Claim the Science Wonder that is in Berlin - Objective is being worked on. Berlin will be the last to Fall.

    3) Lay claim to a large part of their lands, as most of what we wanted would be FP Centric and would be Profitable Territorys for our Continued growth. THis would also deny the other Cives the use of those Territories - Objective has 2 more Cities, maybe 3 until it is met. We do need to try to lay claim to the Cologne area, but that would be a Palace Centric City and would not be as good as the others, atleast until the Palace is moved.

THe War with Rome, on the other hand was not our making, and the only thing that I consider to be very valuable in Rome's Territory, is their Wonders. But that is all they would be good for, because the cities would be highly corrupt. The Roman War had been fought as more of a defensive War, than an offensive one. Yes we have taken 1 City and greatly damaged their military and we can do more.

But in the long run, do we want to have Rome in a position to not be able to pay us for the technologies that they were buying (and enriching) from Germany. We want them damaged for what they did to us, but do we want them to be so damaged, that we would not make a decent amount of money from them?

This was the primary reason that we are doing what we are to Germany, so that the other Rich Nations would be paying us for the techs and not Germany.

As we can hurt them a bit more, but we should be starting to look at what else we want to get from them, when the War is over. If we didn't have the MPP's , we would most likely be at Peace with them now.

What roadcage is suggesting as good goals is that we put ourselves in a position to control the entire contenient by 1500ad and therefore make the domination victory easily obtainable.
By the end of this war we should have a beachhead into minor and a centralised striking position to reach everyone in major. As a result we can direct our focus anywhich way we see fit.

It is better to be prepared to war in advance then put ourselves in a disadvantage.

I'm after a Space Ship victory, as such I think we've more than accomplished all our goals with regard to Rome simply by taking over the city with the Ivory.

The only thing they have left to offer is Refinery and GPT, which razing 1 more city of should let us get if it won't already.

With regard to Germany: wipe them off the map.

Thank you nz_upy, it is comforting to see that someone grasped the idea. We want to be able to initiate the next war against which ever Abananaba Major or Minor Civ that reaches the top of our hit list. And we want to get those staging points under the cloak of this war, rather than displaying our hand so openly as we did against Germany with the city of Abandonment.

It doesnt matter what victory condition we go for just that this plan would allow for more manuoverability. And a large navy would allow for the ability to respond to the overseas threats.

The better prepared we are more options there are.

The discovery of Refinery will tell us if we need to annex additional Roman territory just for Oil.

Otherwise, additional cities in Roman territory is useless to us even after the Palace is relocated due to corruption rules as we have to expend more money on military units than we get net revenue empire wide.

A large navy is unneeded. 3 Battleships near Uber Island are plenty for defense. (It's okay for enemy transports to land on the mainland, we have plenty of units to fight them there.)
