I'm also thinking it would be a safe source of fundage. With the way everything's becoming developed on the mainland and the dawn of knights around the corner any war could easily turn into temporary city lossages (a stack of enemy knights takes Del Monte forcing us to retake it, etc I used Del Monte as I see the Greeks as the biggest threat), what with all the ROPs going around.

Colonial holdings on a separate land mass would be immune unless they hauled a expedition by boat and whoever is there first has the advantage of knocking off invasion forces piecemeal.

It is very important that we get there asap.

Before the french, have you seen their galley?, or any other ai gets there. Then we'll have a little edge on them.

We are moving forward with this endevor. The settler is being produced now, and in fact will be ready prior to the fleet returning from france. Hopefully the french bastards will not attack it in route.

The plan is simple - send one galley over. This is risky in that it must spend AT LEAST one turn in deep water and risk sinking. When it is over, it explores for one turn, making sure that the land has at least one space to found a city. The same time the first galley is looking at the isle, the settler boards the second galley and it is positioned as close as possible, but WITHOUT placing it in any danger. Next turn; The galley at uber isle moves one space into deep water, the settler galley moves 2 squares (there are I assume 3 deep waters between safe waters) then unloads the settler - who jump into the waiting uber galley, who returns to safe waters. The other galley starts to move back toward the mainland, and we hope it doesn't sink when its turn ends.

If the war goes well, we will send a warrior or spear with the settler, who will explore along with the galley that is over there.

Assuming there is no competition, first order is to construct a grainery, to turn the city into a settler and worker factory. Second is a temple. Third is a harbor. All will be interspersed with settler and worker builds to take full advantage of the new land.

How about my proposal? It is less risky though it doesn't let us explore ahead (though we can explore with the ship + settler once it's in safe waters).
Here is my proposal:

First, let's give names to all the tiles involved.
Tile A is the tile SE of Apolyton. Tile E is the first coastal tile. Tiles B to D are the tiles in between.

Preparation phase: both galleys are either in tile A or in Apolyton. Galley 1 is emtpy, galley 2 contains a settler / settler+spearman / 2 settlers or whatever we decide to load onto it (we'll refer to galley 2's cargo simply as 'cargo').

Phase 1: galley 1 moves to tile C and ends the turn. 50% chance of sinking and losing 1 galley. Galley 2 holds its position.
Phase 2: if galley 1 sinks build another galley and return to phase 1. Otherwise send galley 2 to tile B. Move cargo from galley 2 to galley 1. Galley 1 moves to tile E. Galley 2 moves to tile A or another coastal tile. Both galleys end the phase in safe waters.
Phase 3: galley 1 can now either drop the settler onto Uber Isle or explore its shores (it still has 1 movement point left for the turn).

I am unsure about the 50% chance. I never got any solid confirmation of this. However, whatever the risk is, we'll only have to face it once (during phase 1) so it's minimal.

There's room for only two units aboard a galley. If we want to send more we'll have to send two galleys. This means double the risk.
Besides, there's very little chance that the enemy AIs are going to colonize Uber Isle. It's too far away from any other capital and if they build colonies on the island they'll be so corrupted that they will only produce one shield per turn and in the long run they'll actually lose money, not gain. If we need a military unit along with the settler, it's to guard it from barbarians.
