Our mayors have all been volunteers thus far. We actually had mayors before we had governors! Part of being a mayor is promoting your city. Our mayors start a thread about their city and make updates (including screenshots) from time to time. Some of our popular cities (like PDX) have great city threads. Some cities have only recently gotten mayors. It is never too early (or too late) to try the mayor thing!
No offense guys, but I dont see why this thread should be topped. Its nice to read, but its not vital information. Its taking up topped-space that could be better used.
And without sub-forums, your top space is at a premium. Activity should keep it visible without sticking (topping).
With your larger player base, you've got an excellent pool for micromanaging. You might do well to make mayors official. Perhaps go with governors who are elected and let them appoint mayors for their province cities?
With all respect to Mr. Ninot, “…could be better used for”… what? As I posted in the Mr. Skywalker's thread, it’s fun: "Join Today! Recruiting crew for our new ship!" (Everybody knows, is here: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...73#post1153454).
I participate in a lot of polls and vital threads, reading everything and trying to understand correctly. And it’s hard for me, my english sucks! Besides, it’s my duty. After a long working day in Banana HQ, I need a beer...

Our words are backed with nuclear weapons.
Scary, Ain't I?
I know not what this topped thing is. Is this a common adjective in Apolytonia? Is it as common as your bananas. I think whereas you would have a top banana we in Phoenatica would have a corresponding sticky banana. Due to our spices no doubt.
But your country is young. Soon your people will learn to automatically scroll past the topped threads and go directly to the important stuff.
As the President of Phoenatica, I'd like to welcome everyone in Apolytonia to our embassy. I hope you will find it useful in learning about our people and culture, as we hope to learn from yours. I see this as the first step to exchanging cultures and traditions with both nations.

It would be good to hear what the pres and other ministers think about mayors?
We're actually debating the importance of mayors and possiblity of deputy governors ourselves in Phoenatica. Some members of our government feel they're useless and are just a waste of forum space, others beleive they're are a great thing to have and want to see more. You can see the debate here.
Let me give you another chunk of mayoral history. The first edition of mayors didn't work well. The concept then was to have a single thread were each mayor would have one post that they edited to keep the city information current. This would give a spot on the forum where anybody could go to find city info at any particular time. Lack of updates and lack of people looking at the thread severely reduced its usefulness.
The current method of mayors reporting their city info and requests directly to their governors works quite well. A model for this system is Asphynxia where just about every city has a mayor and governor AlmightyJosh encourages and relies heavily upon them.
As a former department leader my opinion is that mayors are fantastic when they work. It gives another avenue for citizen participation in the government. It adds a level of micromanagement and another set of eyes to catch problems. Most importantly, it's a fun, roleplaying experience. Take a look at the Asphynxia province thread in our government subforum to see what I mean. These guys really get into it.

I used to be the Mayor of New Falcon's Haven (guess who named it ) during the "old system" I found I didn't have time since I was military Leader, and New Falcon's Haven has no Mayor right now.
I think they're still reserving the spot for me if I want to reclaim it .
