It almost seems that we are playing on a small world instead of large. Like trip said there many civs in the neighbourhood.
This can be an advantage, since we can tech whore early and we can conquer civs faster which means more tech, gold, cities by means of extortion!
A disadvantage is that other civs can expand relatively unhindered.
But I think it overall a good thing to have other civs close by.
