Every civilization named here seems a fine addition to me. Of course I mostly fancy the Dutch. The Arabs are a civ that I have missed in the other games as well. They should get their chance this time I think.

The Spanish...I don't see why they were preempted for the French, though they're entirely different Civilizations, but oh well. They're just, in my opinion, more important.

I'm also peeved about not having the Celts. I understand why they're gone, but I do have Celtic heritage, so it's more a personal nuance.

I miss the most important muslim civs (Arabs, Turkish), some ancient native American civs (Incas, Mayas) and a western African civ.

About Africa - why did they ever choose the Zulus instead of, for example, the old empire Mali? There are more than enough real civs in Africa, so that can't be the problem.

Spaniards and Arabs. Yeah, the Arabs weren't actually in Civ II as a real civ, but I liked them. Go Saladin!

I also miss the Vikings and Celts, the latter because I'm part Irish...
oh god how did this get here I am not good with livejournal

I miss the Celts, for their cool city names.
I miss the Mongols, for their insane expansionism.
I miss the Carthagians, for their Roman rivalries and the obvious Elephant charge.
I wish they had more civs, like the Arabs, African civs, Incas, etc.

Still, you can have too many. Don't make the mistake of Call to Power (not saying their bad or anything, but do Jamacians, Cubans, Welsh, and Turks really deserve to be in the same catagory as Rome, Greece, China, France, etc?)

P.S. I have to admit a guilt. After playing Civ III for a while, I had to struggle to remember which civs had been left out .
For the cities which were formerly great, have most of them become insignificant; and such as are at present powerful, were weak in the olden time.

Mongols... they actually had the largest empire of world history, to my knowledge. Of course it cannot be measured accurately, but it might have been bigger than the Soviet Union at its largest... so I can't imagine why couldn't they drop iroquis (yeah, secret way to add the Canadians in the game ) or zulus.

Incas and Mayans - the largest and most influential civs of native America, hands down. It's quite sad that they have always favored the Aztecs, whose empire only lasted for a little while and was not much compared to these two...(or might these be the secret way to add the Mexicans? Of course you must have both of your neighbours in the game you damn yanks ). Of course I'd still retain Aztecs in the game.

Arabs and Turks -for obvious reasons, and their great impact on world history.

Those come to my mind first. Of course, Civ gamemakers have always made crappy choices for civs *cough*zulus*cough*sioux*cough*iroquis*cough...

In point of fact, the British Empire, covered in area, at its greatest extent (post WWI, acquisition of former German colonies), the largest empire so far seen. Also, notably, the most diverse, in terms of landmass, and locations, and cultures.

The Mongol Empire constituted the largest contiguous land based empire so far seen. Their notable failures, being of course, Kublai Khan's naval expeditions against Japan, and the attempted invasion of Srivijaya in present day Indonesia. They also did not fare too well in tropical conditions (unsuitable for horse grazing and rider based warfare) and hot desert conditions.

It should also be pointed out, however, that sheer size of empire counts for little. What should be noted was the safety Mongols offered travellers and commerce in their empire and their courting of artisans and artists, and their adaptability.
