Settlements in Scandinavia date to 5000bc. Modern Scandinavian culture started in 500 bc with the founding of Trondhiem. The region was the second most advaced area, second only to the Celts.
The area didn't become involved with the rest of the world until the Middle Ages. At that time the population became too high, the Scandinavians had to settle new lands. The Viking Era Began. "Viking" is a Norse word meaning "warrior" or "soldier". The Vikings founded or conquered many cities abroad. The Danes, under Canute IV, took over England. The Swedes Conquered the eastern Slavs and intermixed with then to become modern Russians. The Norwiegians fonded Dublin, Ireland; they settled Iceland and Greenland. They also tried to settle North America, but the Native Americans repeled them. In the late Middle Ages the Scandinavians became christians, ending the Viking Era. In the Renassance the Swede Carolus Linnaeus created the system of classifying life we use today. Many of the great Norse Sagas wre written at this time. The Scandinavians today have the highest quality of life in the world.
