Wow, this is much more weighted than I expected. 3 civs are controlling the poll, all others with less than 2 votes!

I'm surprised the Zulus haven't gotten more votes. Where did all the militophiles go?

Given the game's supposed emphasis on non-military means of winning, as well as the increased difficulty of rapid civ expansion, perhaps people realize such tactics may not work well in Civ3?

            Any expansionistic civ sucks.

Chinese used to be the best(scientific $ Ind.), but its place belongs to the Persians(Iranians).

Abilities may also differ in strength according to difficulty. It seems that religious civs are more useful at the higher difficulties when you have more of a problem with unhappiness (assuming religious buildings still contribute to happiness).

Still, I picked the Germans, because at least in Civ2, my thing was to have the biggest military and be ahead in science. Although I think the Germans should be Commercial more then militaristic, if you want to be more accurate. So I would swap their abilities with the Greeks (commercial? Athens, maybe, but not really...)

I was under the impression, in my years of historical study, that Germany was the very definition of a militaristic society. They have historically had the best trained and most numerous military (as well as the most integrated into their culture) which was emulated by several other countries (particularly Japan). The germanic culture that came out of that area and dominated most of Europe during the middle ages was *very* militaristic (starting out as raiders and ending up a warrior aristocracy). Of the european civs, it is the English and the Dutch that come to mind when I think "commercial."

Expanionist seems to me to be the least-attractive ability.
                    Cheers.
Two words: GOODY HUTS. Yum Good results from huts can make or break the early game. Nothing sucks more than when every hut you grab contains barbarians.

Actually, given the way most people played Civ2 (save-reload huts until desired result), I suppose you're right. This is the least desirable CSA, for anyone but the one who actually plays them as he gets them (like me). It is for this reason I like the English: yummy goody huts, and mo money!
                    To those who understand,
                    I extend my hand.
                    To the doubtful I demand,
                    Take me as I am.

I agree. I totally agree, but regarding dutch no other CSA comes to mind

Maybe if they introduce a new "agricultural" CSA? or very very very maybe scientific (also not really I guess).

You forgot the main reason Commercial is beneficial to your warmongering! Since units are now upgraded with cash and not production, extra money means you can maintain many more units!

If industrious is the clear leader with Persians and French leading, then it seems that scientific and commerical would be the next 2. Yet the Germans with military/scientific have more votes than the Greeks with scientific/commercial.

In other polls it was a pretty close race between scientific and industrious. Yet the Germans get many more votes than the Chinese...
