Emperor, But I rarely bother to finish the game. As soon as I'm out of the hole, I start a new game

By the way, if you feel you are between levels, just pick the level you feel you enjoy playing more

I said Monarch, though if I'm motivated to do the MMing required, Emperor is enjoyable.

I've yet to finish a demi-god game because I just don't work that hard at playing any more.

I think the poll results are not that suprising. In the future we should be trying to get an influx of Chieftan-Regent players. Our purpose is to teach the player how to get better at Civ, it's easier if they began at a lower level AND it makes the AU look better

er, I think only one of the panelists has voted so far.

I think that most of the C3 forum is a technocracy, not a democracy.

How do you know that only one of the panelists have voted? And I don't see how your second point is relevant to the thread or my last statement.

To the second point, I never felt our purpose was to teach anyone anything, really. I always felt this was more of a communal get-together that attempts to improve the AI and play together and learn from each other.

I know it sounds like I'm playing semantics there, but as fine a line as it is, it's an important distinction to me. Maybe it's so subtle a difference that noone else cares, but for the usual "teach me to do X" or "why do I always fall behind at point Y", I thought that was the purpose of the strat forum.

Again, maybe it's too subtle and semantic for anyone but me to notice or even care about, in which case, just ignore me.

Edit: I left out a small bit - the point about improving the AI has always been one of the pillars of the AU. Those that are having trouble at Warlord-Regent level typically don't want better AI.

Edit: Sorry, when I said second point, I was referring to NM's "second" point about our purpose. Just to be clear on whose second point I meant. Jeeze, have I made my post confusing enough yet?

                    Sorry, let me eloborate:

So far we have a group of seven panelists, of whom some play at diety (alexman, Theseus, formerly Dominae).

the point about the technocracy was that the leaders of such an organisation are the smartest. While all here are undoubtedly intelligent (except me, of course. I just watch and learn), those who understand the game to an unparrelled degree in certain areas, eg game mechanics (corruption), specific strategies and their corralation to the game (OCC, exploits) etc will be able to make the best decisions since they understand the game better than all the rest, and hence improve the game.

To me, it's always been a half and half thing. The AU mod is clearly made for improving the AI and making a more enjoyable game, rather then teaching new players. The strategy forum does not have the courses that we have in the AU Forum. Depending on the view of things, if people think that the AU is not about teaching, then I ask if we can introduce it. I signed up for the Dean position because I have time, AND because I want to help the AU. I suggest we start some courses that focus on new players and advertise about it. All I ask is for someone to create courses, because I am lacking in that area.

I still don't see what that has to do with anything in the thread?

That's where the subtle difference comes in - to me, AU is about learning, not teaching. We're all here to learn, we're not necessarily hear to teach, per se.

My old "Ducki Does...." threads in the strat forum and MountainSage's "Improving C3C Emperor Skills" games seem to me more about someone (or multiple someones) actively teaching as opposed to several folks coming together to discuss and learn.

I really do feel like I've gone pretty far down the semantic rabbit hole here, I just wanted to point out my own feelings on the "AU is about teaching" bit. I'll let it go and others can weigh in.

Basically, this thread asked a specific question, but it did not ask why. Since you will not learn anything other than the obvious, I was trying to point out that it is the most able that we glean understanding from, so that it is a technocracy.

This links to Duckis POV that the Strat forum is where we are taught, here "We learn"

(and yes, this is OT, and fairly semantic)

I think we can let this thread go OT as long as we stick to talking about the AU. I see your point Ducki, what if someone was to create a course that was specifically made to help people do certain things, that was targeted at lower levels?
