It's been a while getting to this game, but here's the next segment. Emperor, AU mod rules.

At the end of the last report, I had declared on Sumeria, and seized a few cities in the northern portion of the continent.

110BC: I take Sumer, the last city he has with gems. Maya have feudalism, but won't trade for my Monotheism. They seem to be getting increasingly hostile all the time. Will need to keep an eye on him.

50AD: War is dragging out longer than I'd like. Sumerians have counterattacked pretty well. I haven't lost any cities, but my offensive is grinding to a halt. It was very stupid of me to neglect producing enough mil units. (I'd been trying to develop infrastructure during the war. You'd think I'd learn after a while.) I finally take
Ur, gain Temple of Artemis. Not a top-notch Wonder, but at least it expand borders on this continent.

210AD: The Sumerian city of Bad-tibira falls. Almost over now.

230AD: War finally ends with Sumerians' destruction. Costly, but at least I still have not triggered my GA.

260AD: I'm really interested in keeping Maya happy, so, with one turn till Theo, I trade Mono to Smoke for 92g, 11gpt, silk and wine.

330AD: Taking the top row of techs, I invent Printing Press and start the contact trading. Begin with
the Maya, trading contact w/ 4 civs and ivory for engineering, 53g and 2 gpt. I then trade him Theo for 44gpt. Get in touch with Catharine, who gets contact with 5 civs in exchange for dyes, 15g and 22gpt. The English get 2 contact and Theo for Furs and Invention.

470AD: Seeing no real reason to keep them around, I declare on Hittites.

490AD: I seize the city of Aleppo. Decide to rush my FP there with a now very old MGL. I wanted to make sure that I had the FP built before my GA. As part of my effort to stay on Smoke's good side, I trade Education (which also renders his GL useless) and ivory to him for Silk, Chemistry and 6gpt.

500AD: The Hittites launch a devastating counterattack at Aleppo. My swordsman army is reduced to a single hit point, but survives.

510AD: My turn. I crush a swarm of 3-Man Chariots outside Aleppo, hoping to break the Hittites' back. On the diplomatic front, I trade Engineering to France for 23g and 2gpt.

520AD: Very cool. I generate another MGL (no. 3), which will become a Med Infantry army. This should pretty well crush them.

530AD: I finally trigger my GA by sinking a ship in port. I'm 4 turns from Economics and decide to start a pre-build for Smiths. I trade Banking to Maya for 516g, wines and 60gpt, as well as to the English for furs, 48g and 2 gpt.

    550AD: I seize Hattusha.

    560AD: Tyranna falls.

570AD: I decide to trade Gunpowder to Russia for Dyes, getting the most out of my GA by keeping everyone happy.

600AD: Harran falls, only two cities to go.

610AD: Both Ugarit and Hattusas falls, marking the end of the Hittites.

660AD: Trade Econ to Netherlands for spices, monarchy, 7g and 20gpt, as well as to the Maya for 698g and 20gpt. I found the city of Ani, the last city on far Western island. I also found Edessa on the island to south of old Hittitia.

680AD: The city of Taormina founded on the gold hill of the same southern island.

750AD: For the past several turns, the Maya have grown increasingly restless. On this turn, they were moving into my territory, clearly planning an attack,so I forced them to declare and sank a galley and a caravel.

820AD: I'm not looking to go to war (yet) with Smoke, so I make peace ASAP. Since they lost a number of ships, they agree while paying me 144g and 3gpt.

840AD: I nter the Industrial Age, for the first time getting Medicine as my free tech.

910AD: I finish Steam Power, and begin railroading. Given the location of the coal, I'm glad I chose to start colonizing the far western island when I did. The stupid Maya are getting frisky again, and the Netherlands is starting to probe my territory as well. To top it all off, the blasted English built a city on the southernmost tundra square on the souther island a few turns ago. It's going to be no use to them, but it deprives me of the gold mountain next door. I'll get even with her (Though she's far down the list. Smoke is gonna be the real problem.)

Overall, I still feel like I'm in pretty good shape. The Maya are the biggest threat, but the Netherlands could pose a problem as well. Despite being in the tech lead for most of the game, still no SGL. The next Maya war (and it'll be soon, I fear), I'll need to do some damage to their homeland.

Given that I don't have SP, I decide that the optimal thing to do will be to accelerate tech advances as quickly as possible to get to Chivalry. Also, I know that their will be Machiavellian games afoot throughout this game, due to the limitations forced by an archipelago map. I use this as an opportunity to trade and gift tech to the lesser AI civs, as well judiciously sell / gift contacts, thus gaining their positive attitude... stopping, of course, short of Invention for those AI civs that don't have it, while I try to complete Leonardo's. With a lead in Gunpowder, I research Chemistry for negotiating power.

I rush a Library in Satsuma (soon to become a regular activity ) to better connect it with Osaka. As previously mentioned, another MGL was generated in 230 AD.

Upon researching Chemistry and later Metallurgy, I basically took control of the Middle Ages. I was able to trade for Monotheism, Chivalry, and Theology, as well as beaucoup gold and gpt. I built Leonardo's in 390 AD. Upgrading my Horsies to Knights, and then having two 2xKnight Armies, I finally started rolling over Japan.

Another GW-fest: Between 400-440 AD, various AI civs built Sun Tzu, Zeus, Sistine, Knights Templar, and Copernicus.

It sucked missing all those, but I was building the HE… and Knights.

The end of Tokyo: Dateline 480 AD, and I attack with one 2xKnight Army, 10 Knights, and a Pikeman... against Spears. Say g'night, Toku! Buh-bye.

As luck would have it, on the very next turn the idioHittites declare war on mighty Byzantine... big mistake.

Also this turn, I researched Education, to be followed by Banking at 100% and 5 turns. All major cities changed to build oh-so-very-cheap Universities. With the gold thus brought in, upgraded all the Warriors at home to MedInfs as a combined MP / defense force. Decided to leave 1 Pike per city in the former Japan, and the 2 Armies as roving defense (until a beeline for Caravels after Banking). I also planted one Dromon in Mt. Fiery Doom Channel for control.

I started to gather everything else for the attack on the Hittites. Given the location of my troops, and presuming that Sumeria would be the next target, I planned on taking the southermost city on the main Hittite continent and drive my way north. Given the tech lead and production power at hand, I decided not to bother with a combined arms approach, but rather to overwhelm them with Knights and Dromons.

I started off with a not overwhelming force, landing 12 Knights in 520 AD. 9 Dromons, however, were sufficient to give the Pikes in Ugarit a heckuva drubbing, redlining all but one before the attack the next turn, so capturing the city was not really a problem. I did realize after the fact, however, that even though Ugarit had a Harbor it was still cut off from home due to the territory of Adana, the city on the northernmost tip of the southern isle, so I tasked 6 Knights there for some razing and beach relaxation... problem solved. I also tasked 2 Dromon to block the canal between the north and south Hittite isles.

I again decided to conduct a slow war with the Hittites... I built a Library in Ugarit immediately, and then smacked around the many MedInfs and Longbows that come a-visiting across 2 tiles of my cultural territory. SUCCESS!! Another MGL in 650 AD, quickly turned into a 3xKnight Army based at Ugarit. Dromon wolf packs quickly burned and sank any stray Hittite Galleys. I started ferrying over reinforcements, and upon Caravels, brought over the other two 2xKnight Armies, and added a Knight to each.

My economy was just rocking at this point, such that I was able to research at 100% and yet still bring in some surplus gpt. Tech, luxury, and select commo trades kept me firmly in control, as well as helping to maintain positive to gracious attitudes on the part of the AI civs.

By 700 AD I had captured four of the Hittite cities, north through Tarsus (Oracle), thus providing saltpeter. WOO HOO!! Mass upgrades to Muskets and Cavs (all-Knight Armies work particularly well with Cavs). The Hittites would soon fall. Here is a screenshot from 720 AD… I later filled in the openings with cities at Hattusas 999 and 114 (even though it’s on a cow).

Lo and behold, however, the friggin’ Mayans show up in a sneak attack that very year!! B*stards!! :grrr:

I must admit though, a fairly impressive IC attack for the AI.

Luckily, I had sufficient local MedInfs, and reinforcement Cavs awaiting transshipment, that I was able to deal with the Mayan stack quite handily, taking it down to 2 Longbows.

In a fit of anger, I arranged for a dogpile. In certain cases, like Russia, I had to gift communications with Maya before arranging the alliance!

I shortly captured Aleppo, made peace with the Hittites and extorted whatever I could, including 3 random cities around the world, which I gifted to France, Egypt, and Russia. Oh yeah, peace also cost an MA against the Maya!

Dromons sailed the northern seas destroying Mayan vessels at will. Other than that, I settled in for some serious building, especially getting the Japanese and Hittite lands into good shape… generally, Library, Temple, Harbor, Courthouse, and then whatever other stuff was appropriate or made sense, e.g., Markets, Aquas, etc. Cash rushed many of the cheaper buildings, as I was really bringing gold in hand over fist due to tech trades. Built a bunch of Workers too, to get ready for the RR spree.

In 830 AD I built Magellan’s. In 840 AD I was able to trade Free Artistry to a gracious Netherlands, and thus enter the Industrial Age, gaining Steam Power in the bargain, and in a tech lead except for Sumeria which had Monotheism.

Thanks for the friggin’ surprise!! Jeez, makes the southern Mayan lands look awfully tasty!

                  Literacy (%)
(Citizens who live in a city with a Library + Citizens who live in a city with a University + Citizens who live in a city with a Research Lab) / 3 / (Total Number of Citizens) * 100% + (3% if Literature discovered)
If every city has just a library you will have 33%, because they are missing the other 2 science buildings.

Why, oh WHY didn't I go after Maya's southern tip?

                                Link to DAR3:

So when we left it in 950BC the Sumerians were about to get a kicking.

Sumer on the coast fell in 875BC with the help of Dromon bombardment, but I didn't feel I had enough to foray deep into Sumerian territory. I waited for reinforcements and kept Sumer under tight control. I was worried about flips since Sumeria had decent culture and Sumer was my entry point. When I had enough units I headed for the mountain to get more info. In 750 Ur was my next target. The bombardment had ensured no GA yet for Sumeria, but I could not expect to have similar luck taking the capital with no bombardment.
