The criterion has to be whether they can be used quickly. All any of those tools do is tell you things you can work out anyway, so they speed things up. Of course it can go the other way if it allows things to be worked out that were not easily figured out before........this could lead to slowdown, and is the only thing that needs to be guarded against IMO.

i'd say ban them all as they reduce the fun and induce (further) laziness... but would be willing to go along with a majority opinion to allow them so long as their use doesn't slow down the game.

has anyone used some of them and know how long it takes to use them?

I've only used hut finder... and used between turns, and NOT DURING THE TURN, it does speed things up.

It sure beats the heck out of taking the time to plot out where they are by hand

and i only just realized you can cross out the huts (well put a line through them as you pop em or as you realize that they aren't there anymore )

now, this to me takes the fun out of the game, b/c there are times in the past where huts should have been there , and we couldn't say 100% that someone took them..

so if you see huts missing , your rivals are there...

the hutfinder makes it easier, while stealing some of the naivity of the game away

but after some wobbly pops and hippie lettuce, every little break helps

The hut finder has simplified (some anyway) the capital location search. While most of knew the relationship between huts and specials, we weren't anal to the point that Hutfinder is. As a result, not finding a hut early in the game CAN put you at an even greater dissadvantage. (sometimes your land is so good it doesn't matter). This has got me thinking.........so I will fish for other opinions.

Maybe when a person finds a hut in an MP game in the early turns, he should announce it to all. Knowing that people don't want to announce coordinates since it would give away too much info, I was thinking of something else. If I could talk SG into adding the seed number in and use that as a base point, this would eliminate the problem of announcing the coordinates.
This way no one would have an additional disadvantage of not knowing the pattern.

            What do you people think?

What if you take the resources to send out many exploring units to find the huts first?
If you have to announce the location of the hut when you find it you may as well not waste the resources on trying to find the hut pattern first and just wait until someone else finds it.
If someone makes that extra effort to find the first hut should they not be rewarded for it?

Yes, thats the other side of the coin, which is why I wanted to hear from others.

But when someone starts with a hut on their opening screen, (which in a four man game, usually at least one person does every game) it's an even bigger advantage than before.

its a huge advantage early to have one on the opening screen...hut finder should be banned b/c of this

Hmm, don't ever remember you telling me a hut location over icq phone before. must have been someone else.

If you ban the huthunter people will go back to their sheets. (i've stuffed them somewhere) As much as we want, i don't think we can stick the genie back in the bottle.

It's the sheets or hut finder... And I waste more time comparing sheets than using hut finder...

Yes... having a hut on the opening screen helps... but once you have a second hut and a few specials, the same can be said about the paper charts...

And the Cubs SMOKED the Mets today 15 - 2...

ok, so lets keep the hut finder in and if you get a hut on your screen, say your thanks to the civ gods and play on, restarting for this is bunk, we will never get a game going...

sigh...my redsox bullpen blew it tonite....

Yea, closer by committee never seems to work.

You misunderstood, I'm not saying restart. I'm saying if we can get SG to include the seed number in HF that the person that has a hut, says the seed number for others to use.

                                Congrats Clemens, and those CUBS
