Call To Power 2 Cradle 3+ mod in progress: https://apolyton.net/forum/other-games/call-to-power-2/ctp2-creation/9437883-making-cradle-3-fully-compatible-with-the-apolyton-edition
Hey Doc... I know your timing doesn't work for setting up games... but please register for the Civ II MP Civ group... it's a matter of spam, I mean pride
The problem is... they listened to TOO many of them. They have made a game that has taken to much of the fun out of it. Many of the complaints can be tracked directly to people saying such and such is too easy. Unfortunately, they went overboard... every time somebody posted a way to win, they killed it with the next patch. Bummer!
You know, civ3 isn't a bad game......in fact it's quite good.....just not as good as it could have been.
I have always been sceptical about MP though.....the game seems less suited to it than civ2 (though that was probably serendipitous). I think it is symptomatic of the general problem of getting designers to think a bit more about MP, when SP is overwhelmingly the main market.
We whined way to much... and now we have a game where they have taken all the fun out of it. The corruption model is a joke... and their attempts to remove ISCing were worse than the cure. Maybe after a few more patches it will be ok, but for now, Civ II is still the best alernative.
I think MP is the main market Doc, since every game these days has some kind of support for it...
The reason they're catching hell for this latest upgrade is because most of it could have been released as a patch, with the extras (New Civs and MP support) getting released towards the end of this month.
Another month working with gamespy(ware) and tweaking the MP would have been a great deal more important to the average player than the "wait for the next patch" fiasco we have going now.

This is flat wrong. For the vast majority of games the SP market is much bigger than the MP market....sure many games come with MP, but ultimately most games are designed with the SP market in mind. Civ 3 is a good example.
There are games where MP is as important as SP......things like AOM, or Warcraft 3, various FPS, but most games just don't have the MP interest to make the developers pay that much attention to MP.

Cheer up Ming, We've also got Freeciv. Which stands alot closer to the original Civ1/2 model then Civ3 turned out to be.
I only wish more people would give it a try. With more people the alpha/beta/test-cycle would go far quicker. Oh well...maybe the SDL client wil help out.
Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.
