  • ICQ.....All multi-play should be built around it.

    Hey everyone

I was thinking long and hard about the multiplayer aspects of Civ 2. There really isn't a big community center for multiplayer freaks. Except the zone which i really do love to hate. ICQ, that is where everyone should be located, but how.... an ICQ Activelist. Some abitious guy or girl out there or myself perhaps could build an Activelist devoted to the well being of the players of Civ 2. Reply with or PRO's or CON's. The choice is up to you.

That's a really good idea but I don't know how to use/what the ICQ active list is, but I'd be willing to learn.

Umm thanks for the reply guys, i appreciate it.

Smash it is something like that but they sign themselves up to the Activelist. The Activelist is inside your ICQ most people use them for games, they are quite handy. Say you want one for Quake, so you search for it using your ICQ and then you may sign your self up to it. People use these Activelist's to get aquainted with other people who play the same game. A Chat Module is built into the activelist, News For the Day is also built in.

I do not know why someone hasn't thought of this before.

Tell your Civ friends to check this idea out and if they have any questions tell them to post a reply.

LET"S GET THIS IDEA INTO PRODUCTION!

Damn fine idea. Bearing in mind that ICQ can be quirky in its habits, which is to say it can refuse to connect when it feels like it. A couple of us use MSN Messenger as a back-up. Its only real drawback being, it seems to me, that you can't leave an MSN message for someone if they're off-line. Perhaps you can, I've just never worked out how.

oh ya ok.Problem for me is the MAC version of icq deosn't have half the features of the pc version.I can't find anything like that.I do know what you mean though.I sold my PC awhile back but I do remember the different "lists" you could make with PC icq.

              So Shecky:
Would you like to help me do this? I know a few Civ 2er's that wouldn't mind being on the list and I'm always up for a new programming challenge.

              My ICQ number is 20706862.
I'll look into that ActiveList now.

Edit: I just read through the Info on Activelist. But I don't quite get it all and the owner of the list would have to have it open at all time for the administrators to be able to manage the list and people to participate in it. I'm not online enough to be a owner but I'll gladly be an administrator and member.

Thanks for the replies everybody, I greatly appreciate the interest.

I have sent an E-mail to Dan (the guy in charge of Apolyton). I am still waiting for a reply.

The Activelist should only be on and available to everyone if it is going to work good. Someone with a cable or satellite connection should be the owner of the list because they can have it on 24 hours a day. I would like that very much but i don't think it is going to happen. Someone who is on normal hours would be fine, I wouldn't think that that would be a problem for players.

The other good thing about this list is that you could forget about those silly little MSN messenger accounts.

Remember everyone who is a player will be on there, it will be super. Your own little Community Center for the Civ 2 fans out there.

ICQ already is the default way to set up MP games. Yeah, people post their intent for a game in threads, but ICQ is used to finalize the game.

I don't really see the need for what your propose. The current thread showing people's ICQ is more than adequate for my needs.

I play different settings and different rules than many of the people here. I already know the people that enjoy the same types of games that I do. I also know which of them are dependable, and won't drop out of a game after a bad start.

If I want to play a game, I just post my intent if I don't see any of the normal gang on line. People who like the settings I do, can respond, and I can then contact them through ICQ. The last thing I want is a bunch of random ICQ's asking if I'm up for a game. Since I have a DSL connection, I appear on line all the time. I don't need 50 ICQ's waiting for me when I get home from work

Sorry you feel that way Ming but i think this idea will really take off.

About 10 people are already to do it.

All we need is an Owner.

count me in. icq 67465766. Will this allow live chat among apolyton players? then why not. Ming, I think he's talking about chatting rather than setting up games.

I see the value of what you suggest, but I already have a "play list" on my ICQ of people I enjoy playing with

The last thing I need is a bunch of people on an ICQ list that I will probably never play a game with. My address book is pretty long as it is now

                        Good luck...

No offence Ming but why don't you just close your ICQ when your at work. I got a bunch of ICQ friends that have a cable connection and nothing bugs me more then seeing then there but they aren't home. Is it so hard to just hit the little "X" before you leave the room?!?!?!? I don't think so.

Anywho you would have to put yourself on the list either, I mean it would be your choice.

Don't apologize cornmaster, while I can understand Ming's need to appear on-line all the time, it bugs the hell out of the people that play MP routinely with him. (including me )
When I hijack his machine on Friday nights I sometimes turn the NA off just to irritate him.

I have a cable modem but I only turn on ICQ if i'm looking to chat or play. (I wouldn't want my wife or daughter to see half the moronic ICQs that I get) My list isn't as long as Ming's but it is sufficient to get games going. (Ming is right about different people liking different settings)
So while I think what you guys are doing is probably admirable, I'll stick to the ole tried and true method.

                              Good Luck
