But I'll still take currency first, unless I need dips real bad. Or making a run at philo.

agree with rah..writing for the early bribe of a horse to get the barb king....but yes getting that boat is great...especially if your tech path isn't one of a SSC route....
mysticism if i am growing is always nice esepcially if my cap has that early temple...and i am expanding quickly
I like to take mysticism... but as you say, only if I'm rich in food... and I have or will building temples soon.
Sometimes I will pick something else besides currency because I know I won't be in a position to be building caravans in the near future because of the need to crankk out more settlers from my core cities or defensive units because of barbs or an early neighbor
Seriously, wouldn't you still want it early to go fast trade? Unless MAP is desperately needed what else will help more?

Unless desperately in need of defensive units I would more likely go for writing or map making. I'm an avid explorer of the map. I like to trade for the bronze/markets line techs.
We are usually going for republic, philosophy and the happy wonders for the long games.
Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. Tis the rising of the moon..
It's a lot easier to build those wonders once you have trade.

Currency used to be my first choice after monarchy, now depending on things i put it off...usually cursing when i do, but sometimes the right scenario comes up and vet pults work much better.....
as for the bronze/horse debate.
horse gives the mobility to explore/attack out with success/ chase kings with relative ease
bronze gives safe cities on virtually any defensive terrain early, is on the road to trade, allows early wonder
both fill the second rack....
again a matter of choice and a matter of the layout of the land....
when land is flat, horse is better IMO, when the land is rugged, take bronze and hope for mounted units
With any kind of luck from early huts... (especially if you name is War4ever ), you will have some mounted units... making the choice for bronze much easier.
I swear he's making this crap up just to annoy me.

Once I remember early in the game you telling me you got something good from a hut, and then when the turn cycled I could hear the barb attack in the background over the headphones. Since it was before 3250, It had to be a barb from the hut.
Good stretch
