  • Why is civII better than civI??

Hello everyone out there, Im a fan of civI, and was just wondering how much better civ II was. Obviously, its got better graphics, but that aside, why should I go out and buy civ II?

Who said Civ 2 was better?

Civ 2 is a fantastic game that will keep you occupied for years, the game has many more features including:

    - Wonder Movies
    - Adviser Movies
    - Better Diplomacy
    - Music & Sound FX
    - Scenarios

Just to name a few things. However i don't know if it's worth buying because of the release of Civ 3.

      Buy Civ 2.

You'll O.D. from all the new features in civ 3 if you go directly there from civ 1

Let's see what i come up with.....

civ 2 has more wonders although their usage still makes the game totally unbalanced like the origional

they prevented the phalanx def the battleship fiasco... though there still are some weird outcomes

they dropped the replay in civ2

the ai still can't wage a war nor expand even remotely well

that mongol horde theme is music to MY ears

there are more civs to choose from although they forgot the Canadians

The camel survived civ2 but won't survive civ3

The graphics are better but crappy enough that you can play the game on a dino system...saves on the upgrade factor

hardly anyone plays the orgional anymore making civ2 MGE your best chance for some online action

The foreign advisor is really hot

The game gives you that one more turn feeling just like the origional making it worth the bucks

it makes icq usage easy as pie most important when dealing with diplomatic relations

Wonder videos to showcase your achievements

The tech tree is still loaded with errors

every custom map looks like an amoeba under a petri dish

Civ 2 has eliminated the "instant AI wonder" cheat. That used to drive me crazy in Civ 1. In single player, you are given a one-turn warning when the AI is about to build a wonder, and can steal the wonder by rushbuilding it.

As War4 pointed out, the combat system is much improved. The odds of a phalanx beating a battleship have changed from 2/18 to something like 1/1,000,000. Gunpowder units are a quantum leap in fighting power compared to their predecessors.

The governments and wonders are much better balanced. There are more city improvements, wonders, and units. There is, for example, a new spy unit which is an advanced diplomat. Spies can reduce city population by poisoning the water supply, and also evade SDI (which protects a city from conventional nukes) by planting a terrorist nuke.

The game has an amazing scenario capability. Scenarios can have new artwork, sounds, unit abilities, and custom events generated by turn number or events within the game. There are many incredibly detailed scenarios available on this site which are essentially entirely new games.

Multiplayer. The AI is still lame, but you can't beat the adrenaline rush of playing against other people. The depth of strategy in the game goes to a whole new level when you know the other player(s) can use all the same tricks and strategy you can.

I spent untold hours playing Civ 1, but I don't think I've ever gone back since buying Civ 2.

Civ2 2.42 is on sale at some stores for $4.50.

            By the numbers...

            Civ 2 has 28 wonders
Civ 2 has lots of improvements
Civ 2 has 50 or so units.
            Civ 2 has 21 civs
Civ 2 has a difficulty level beyond emperor (deity)

These are just a few of the things they've added.

            BUY IT!

Don't bother with MPG, though, because by the time you get the hang of civ 2, civ 3 will be coming around the corner.

I spent countless hours on Civ1. I thought it impossible to improve upon. I thought I never would give it up. Then I bought Civ2, and never looked back. It's that good. Civ2 is still one of the top 5 (possibly top 3) games I've ever played. It has a few annoying features, but you will never regret buying it.

Now, what guarantee do we have Civ3 is equally good? CtP, ToT and AC never quite cut it, did they? How much will it cost? When will it arrive?
Civ2 is extremely good. It's dirt cheap. It's here.
                  You should buy.

                    go get it!

I waited forever to buy civ2 because of having a slow pc and also thinking that it must just be "eye candy" improvements, even though the guy I originally started playing civ 1 with highly recomended civ 2. Once I finally went out and bought it, I couldn't figure out why I waited. As others have mentioned, civ 2 is not perfect (and the new map format is a little hard to get used to), but overall, civ 2 is well worth the purchase. It is still the same basic game but with enough changes that first playing it is very similar to the new discovery feeling of when you first started playing civ 1. There is one warning, however, you will greatly miss the replay movie you now get to watch at the end of civ 1.

Besides what everyone else has said.....

A biggie was the elimination of the sell your palace, get a free one in your next city cheat. I used to generate thousands and thousands of gold a turn through the use of massive settler fields. Very useful for setting records.

But I will take a sec to reiterate the biggest. Multiplay. The real challange. I would have stopped playing years ago without it.
And if civ III's MP doesn't work or sucks, I'll continue to play civ II, because after a dozen or so games Civ III will be boring just like Civ I and Civ II solo play.

                      RAH
Having never used it I'll ask. Does the Simplified combat option make the combat the same as Civ I? Or does it just not keep damage?
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

IMHO Civ2 is better than Civ 1 because in order of decreasing importance:

                        a) Multi-Playing available.

                        b) Graphics so much better.

                        c) There are two possible special resource types
for each More Terrain type; and rivers are a modifier
                        rather than a terrain type.

                        d) There are more unit types to choose from.

                        e) AIs are better.

                        f) There is a better balance of unit types; (with Civ 1
the Battleship over attack of 18 and the Riflemen over
defence of 5 unbalance the game).

                        g) The development of improvements such as harbours and
offshore platforms provides more scope for coastal cities.

                        h) Scenarios are available and have more scope than reloads.

                        i) More options for diplomacy.

                        j) Larger worlds possible.

Yes, that's the basic idea. However, I don't know if it's exactly the same as Civ 1 or just mostly the same.

Actually, I think this is still in effect ...it is handy nonetheless.

Actually I don't like the elimination of the phalanx beats battleship. It makes it too easy for the human to steamroller the AI. Makes the game too mechanical. Ican pretty much predict who will win each battle.
