I chose the romans, because i don't want the stupid AI to beat me in a down-to-the-wire Wonder race (if it comes to that). I also prefer the AI civs to be some other color than grey--easier to pick out on the map that way...

I never play the Americans, because they (we) are not an 'ancient civilization' in and of themselves, but an offshoot of the English.

Actully, to get technical, the English could be considered an offshoot of the Celts...
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

I always play the Romans these days. I discovered that the default female ruler for the Romans is Livia. My daughter's name is Annalivia so it has developed as a sort of tibute to her. Plus, the only games I play anymore are OCC and it's much quicker to reload with a bad start site if you use all the default values.
      Here's a link.

          SPQR

The Romans are my favourite civ in Civ2, not only due to their military power, I also find the social and political struggles in the republican times very interesting. From the other ancient civs I also like the Greeks and the Egyptians...I loved Greek mythology since I was a child, and was very impressed when I read the first time about the Persian Wars, where free Greek citizens won their battles against much larger Persian forces. Like the Greek and Egyptian art and architecture too

I voted for the Babs, but the right answer is the Celts. In the matter of "ancient," there is really no reason to pick one from each color. The Celts, Persians, and "Carthaginians" are much older than Rome (or the Mongols and Vikings, who are not ancient at all). (For you sticklers, note that Carthage is an extension of Phoenicia, which was a thriving empire when what is now Rome was still ruled by the Etruscans.)

The reason was I wanted one from each color. And some clarification is in order.
Rome's beginning is approximately 753 bc. Ancient enough for me.
The Celts were never more than a veryloose confederation, and not a civilization at all. They didn't even have a written language. In another thread, I covered this in depth.
The rise of Persia is certainly in the ancient era, but as I said, one to a color, and China is by far older and more important.
The Carthaginians were a colony founded by the Phoenicians in circa 814 BC, so pre-date the Romans by less than 70 years, so are hardly 'far older'. More over, as a nation, their main claim to fame was to lose three major wars to Rome and to have their capital salted over. Hardly important, despite the fact that some players really enjoy them.
As for the Vikings, the choice here was Germany, France or the Vikings, so the choice is obvious.
As for the Mongols, nomadic tribes that China identifies as the the Xianbei in the Xia era (2200-1750 BC), are proto-Mongols, who settled in Gansu province. The Indus river states in Indian is at roughly this time period, but the Mongols are more significant to history, so they get the nod. As for the Souix, they never built a civilization in the sense of the other peoples in civ, so that is that.
I hope this clears up the "why weren't" questions.

My vote went to the Vikings. There's just something mysterious about them. Playing as the Vikings with some Led Zeppelin in the background is simply awesome.

However historians state that ethiopia is the first official empire..... but the zulu's are a long was from that

I like to play my Viking brothers. I may be a mutt as far as ancestory goes, but the majority of me is Teuotonic in origin. I also feel that the Vikings don't get enough credit for their role in history.

Athenians I'll go for, I think, or Spartans maybe.

But wait, what is this - Greek - now who the ancient hell is that?

I vote for a civ I had to add to my rules.txt - the Mayans.

Not only did they create some fantastic art, the most accurate (albeit confusing to us) calendars, mathematics, and architecture, they invented one of the best things ever created by man - the hammock!

I could have picked India or the Souix for Purple, but that's life.

China is far and away more signicant than the Persians.
The Greeks instead of Carthage is a no-brainer, except in your case.
Game designers? what does color have to do with balance? can you explain me that? it was your idea to say there can only be one ancient civ per color...
