Question: What do you mean about "Direct path to receiving city"? You mean no intervening cities or do you mean an intervening ship transport or something else entirely? And is a direct path good or is it bad?

When using this path with the caravan it yields a higher revenue then taking another road.
Just one of the many glitches in Civ as stated in the GL

Beware, the direct path may be different from city A to City B and from city B to city A.
The use of an explorer to see the optimal path is interesting, because with other units, the GOTO path is corrupted by existing road and RR or easy ground.JCP
