Markets and Libs are enough good for science and happiness, with an appropriate luxury level.
I've never seen an unhappy citizen become content by building a Marketplace and/or a Library. Perhaps it would happen in Democracy because of the extra trade arrows, though. I always have Marketplaces and Libraries everywhere before I get to Democracy, so I'm not sure.

In Republic building markets increased happyness and brought peace to a few cities, so I would assume there is some benefit in Demo as well.

How can you determine that? I'm curious (because I do not know)?

YES, market place give trade (then research) and happiness, so banks do.
Library has no effect on happiness, only on research rate.

if you turn cheat mode on in a game and do the cheat build, you can see a person's happiness change when you create the marketplace

Take a saved game, experiment in a few large cities, noting what combination of specialists and Elvii you need to get what combination of happy/ content/ unhappy citizens, then sell some of the Marketplaces & Banks.

See them riot before your very eyes!
