But it happens to be the case that that particular thread doesn't exist either, most likely it was deleted (threads 81846 and 81848 do exist). Which could very well mean it was a classic thread as deleted threads are often quite interesting

Of course, there's always a chance, however unlikely, that the number was chosen at random

Does anyone know how the thread number system works? The thread with the smallest number I could find is 00018 and it dates from 23 Jan 2000.

in order of thread creation i imagine, each new thread gets the next available number :shrug:
