      Actually it's a UNIX idea originally. PHP (The programming language used on these forums) represents time as a number of seconds since January 1st, 1970 (Though it contains processes that turns it back into a "normal" date), because this is the value it gets from the server. When no date is supplied it reverts to 0, which in this case represents Midnight, January 1st, 1970.

      I feel like a fool for knowing this.

          He would be a nerd if he knew his login date as stated on his user info (i.e How many seconds it was from Midnight, January 1st, 1970 to November 2000)
