If Mark and Dan don't make any money out of the site then why do they do it? Neither of them seems to play the games.

That's an interesting question, actually. I know Markos plays every so often. Have no idea about Dan. I suppose they like pain?

If Mark plays he's a bloody snob because he never plays with us, and we have invited him to.

My guess is he doesn't want a thrashing...but then again I supposed he likes pain, so I'm thoroughly confused now myself. I'll stick with my original theory that he's actually Brian Reynolds and simply doesn't have time.

No wonder he doesn't want to play us

I don't mind the ads that much. As long as they don't show pornography, they're find by me.

I think that the best idea is the icon next to your name idea. People who donate get no ads, and then they get an icon put next to their name according to how much they donate. That way it is still free for everyone who can't pay, but people who do donate get no ads plus a nice bonus. And I do agree with most people here that if this site ever needs financial help please don't hesitate to ask us! I would gladly donate money if it would mean keeping a great site like this alive!

I agree with DaveV and others who advocate the "PBS" model of donors either for value added toys/service (cups, t-shirts, icons etc.) or just to support a major form of entertainment. I donate a lot of time and money to different organizations (PBS among them) simply because I enjoy being involved. PBS is a good example, because even though I donate, I don't resent those who don't or can't. Quite the contrary, I strongly support maintaining full free service to non-doners (here and PBS) because the more viewers the better; pay-per-veiw would be the death of both entities.

As for profit, has there every been a suggestion for a true "Apolyton Store?" I'm thinking of Dan and Markos storing books, cups, pens, shirts, Civ related software ect. under their respective beds and selling/shipping on demand. If EB Games can profit from selling Civ so could ACS! Look at all the logo stuff that the folks at SETI@Home sell; I'm sure it wouldn't be there if they didn't make some money. (Plus I'm still wanting an ACS t-shirt or coffee cup!!)

I for one would be a happy contributor, so long as I get a seat with my name on it for the High Holy Days!

I'd suggest this: Simply buy your games from this site (some any way). I just bought EU and Poly got 10%! ($3.90). Now, if Markos can track these purchases to a specific user (I guess that's nearly impossible, though they must track IPs), then we can make our contributions by buying games we want anyway (or just make a straight donation with the title/icon idea).

For the record, I've bought perhaps 15 games from Chips and Bits (all delivered to me overseas in Korea), and I've never had even ONE problem! Not a single problem.
                        <img src="/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1></font></td></tr></table></center>

Yin, where are you finding the link to "Chips and Bits?" I'm in the market for games, memory and Mac OS X (soon). I might consider going through Chips and Bits if the price were right, and help ACS at the same time.

                          MacUser:

First, I hope Markos can leave some permanent links on the main forums page. At one point, he had several TBS games linked there through C&Bs. If anything, people might click just to see the price. But as you are aware, these links appear sporadically.

Markos: Please create a permanent C&B link.

EDIT: <u>This link only shows the banner graphic, but normally you'd see something like this on the site.</u> The one I just saw is here. But we want either their homepage or a greater choice of direct links.

I will emphasize that C&B has never messed up any of my orders, and the stuff arrives even in Korea right on time. That would be great if we could fund 'Poly a bit more this way (I just bought two games this week).

as of today we are posting the weekly top 10 chart from chips

as for an "apolyton store", we have the "games" categories in the links pages, but i guess we need something better....

OK, let's clarify some things here and now.

                              1) Yes, Markos and I play games, Civ titles and otherwise. The amount of time that we get to play them is directly proportional to our workload, which is often quite heavy and thus limits free time to do so.

When we decline to participate in a multiplayer game, it is not because we are snobbish or anything of the sort. We simply, unfortunately, are unable to make the time. We certainly never act as though we know "all there is to know" about any game that we cover or otherwise; in fact, anyone that claims to do so is more than likely being quite untruthful.

                              2) Visitors to Apolyton will never have to pay to gain access to the site. This is something that we do not like to see on other sites, gaming or otherwise, and thus is something that we will not try to emulate. It is also a model that has proven to be more headache than relief and indeed often fails miserably.

I would still buy an Apolyton T-shirt if you would be selling one
The idea of an Apolyton shop appeals to me, as well as others, and may possibly be quite profitable
