Don't like it either. I would have preferred to see more instead of less posts on 1 page as well. And I also have a slow connection.

I'm just wondering is this situation is possible:
A thread has 50 posts in the first page and goes to the 2nd page - but ppl keep posting so it goes the third page with only 40 posts in the 2nd.

Would this cause weird things to happen - or will it not happen at all?

I must be blind! I only just noticed the change when I saw a 130-post thread with 4 pages.
