Mark: And believe me about the popups, i appreciate your work. However, in THIS case, i do NOT appreciate you not doing something about it. Second, ads like "porn site passwords" or "penthouse pets" wouldn't even make it on network television. And whether I PERSONALLY would watch them is not the point. The point is, if this is supposed to be a family site, then those ads are OUT of line. So, i repeat, take some responsibility.

Wow, UGO is the only show in town? You have absolutely no alternatives but accept their ads - every one of them - or fold your site?

To be honest, I stopped watching TV altogether, mainly because of the amount of time I had to spend staring at insulting ads., so rest assured some of us take it seriously.
MarkG I hope you wake up and become a bit more concerned because those ads reflect directly on your website. We know you didn't create them, but you've freely chosen to enter a business relationship in which you agree to display them. Most of them are just dumb (Britney Spears), but some are quite tacky (Penthouse, the Batpole), and make me wonder if I'm at the right site.
Banner ads of scantily clad chicks just do not seem in keeping with the crowd you seem to wish to attract to your website. It will do your advertisers little good if people drop away or install ad blocking software.
I appreciate the hard work the entire Apolyton team puts in to make this fine site what it is and know how hard it can be to keep a web site financially stable, but really, you are sullying your site with these tacky ad graphics.

MarkG, that's exactly it. I have stopped watching television entirely except for the Olympics (I can get those on a Canadian channel, and the Canadians do a much better job with that sort of thing.)
P.S. I've also stopped watching the ads on this site. The Proxmitron does a very good job of blocking most of them.

Mark I seem in the vocal minority, but I honestly don't care what banner ads you have, I very seldom even notice them. I am here for civ related content and good forums,I have never been offended by any of the ads. I will continue to use and enjoy Apolyton no matter what advertising methods you choose to support the site.Keep up the good work and thank you for a well run FREE site.

Mark & Dan, I also think you should do something about the inappropriate banner ads. I saw an especially embarassing one(embarassing for your site) two days ago for rouze.com, that had a picture of a woman pulling up her shirt and exposing a good portion of her breasts. Granted, it probably wasn't technically pornographic, but it was awfully close. Do you really want your site to have these images on it?Is it just me, or are these signatures really annoying? I mean, why do I want to keep seeing the same thing every time someone posts? And don't you hate those really long signatures that take up a whole bunch of space?
For no reason?
Come on, I say we ban signatures!!

MarkG,
There are a lot of other sites that have ad banner support. Isn't it possible to get a different type of ad service from UGO or to get a different provider?
I'm not trying to dump on you. You know I'm a loyal Apolytoner. Even wrote you e-mails during my time of being away.

I find it actually a very good thing that every time I see a crappy ad about a Britney Spears music video UGO has to pay Apolyton some money .This is Shireroth, and Giant Squid will brutally murder me if I ever remove this link from my signature | In the end it won't be love that saves us, it will be mathematics | So many people have this concept of God the Avenger. MarkG,
Don't do anything rash. But maybe you could just talk to UGO and see if those few ads are high money earners. (I doubt the heaviwieght ads are important since they are from the ad server, not a real end customer.) Also, be really sneaky and see if anybody can give you a better deal. Myabe you could even get more money from a different site.
Don't do anything rash. Just do some reconnaisance.

We know you do not make he ad choices. but we do know that 1. you have a lot of hit and therefore clearly have a lot of pull with GS. 2. GS is not the only host in the world.
i find in ironic that if some one upload similar pictures as to what apear in the banners onto the forums that post would probally be deleted (like the one with the woman taking her shirt of).

"And now a now a word form our sponsor..."
For whatever reason, the ads seem to be improving. I'm staring at a gear.com ad right now. I off to vote with my time and dollar and click on their banner...
