  • So foreign languages are banned in threads?

    What about foreign sigs?

I see a few about. They could be saying anything. I suggest we ban them. What do the admin/mods think about this proposal?

    Disagree.

Actually there is one thread in a foreign language, but this is with agreement. Only allowed language is english.

      For sigs:

If somebody feels offended by a sig in a forgein language he will be asked to remove it, as simple as this. But so long nobody complains it's OK.

Plus English by itself is a mixture of different languages, so how do you want to say, what is pure English? And again which English? American, just Queens English? Or what about the Aussies? All different version of the same language, but different meaning and spelling..........

I suggest you concern yourself more with your own posting style so that you don't get restricted as often as you do...

As stated by Gilgamensch, it doesn't seem to be a problem now. If somebody does complain about a persons sig, we look into it. If more and more people started doing it, then we would have to revisit the issue. Maybe MarkG or DanQ have a different position... but the issue isn't really high on the priority list at the moment

Funnily enough, I don't see the problem with it either.

Hmm. I wasn't aware of this.

We often banter about in French for a sentence or two in some of the Civ2 succession games -- since we have players from France, Switzerland, and Canada. Always on-topic and none of it insulting, abusive, or salty.

            Is there an issue here?

If the mods don't see it, no one complains and it isn't excessive then there generally isn't a problem. Whole threads in another language are a problem though.

This happens quite a bit in every Forum, but again, so long nobody is complaining and it isn't getting standard, the mods are looking the other way. But if somebody would complain the mod has to get a translation for it (which might be a problem ) and re-act accordingly...........

That about sums it up. The rule was put in place because SOME people were abusing the rules and hiding behind a different language. As long as people don't complain, be excessive about it, or do dedicated threads, I don't see a problem with it.

There is a Spanish Civ Forum for those who wish to speak in Spanish... and the Fins still have their thread, because it was started before the rule was put in place.

So we can still compliment/insult La Fayette and Julius Brenzaida for their brilliant/boneheaded gameplay in their native tongue.

You could always add foreign swear words to the filter and allow foreign languages in an effort to be "inclusive".

Then I wouldn't be able to use the word 'with' in Spanish. It translates as something kinda nasty in French.

It wasn't really a serious suggestion.
