Also posted over in the Civ4-MP forum ...

We hope to get eight computers courtesy of Firaxis to run MP on. What we need to figure out is *what* to run on them

One thing is assured, which is that Firaxis will be creating an MP map specifically for the tourney, and presumably would prefer us to actually *use* that map. Specifications aren't known at the moment, but I'd presume it's an 8 player map.

    Some options include:
    • An eight player MP game, amongst Poly members
    • An eight player MP game, with some Firaxians asked to participate, and some Poly members
    • A four on four game, Firaxians against Poly members
    • A four on four game, Poly staffers against Poly nonstaff.
    • An exhibition game, probably four on four, Firaxians vs Poly staff.
    • A demogame or succession game.

This is not an exhaustive list. Please note that Firaxis hasn't suggested that they WILL play, although we certainly can ask.

Also, if we end up having Poly nonstaff play in the game (options 1,2,3,4), how should we choose who plays? Options here include a play-in MP tournament, where everyone who wants to play has runoff matches, say 4 player games or something, to see who gets through; selection by the staff (what selection criteria?); or random lot.

Please also feel free to discuss other multiplayer issues here, as many of us will likely be bringing computers along with us to the 'Con. We'll have plenty of time for less official multiplaying (Sleep ... what's that?)

    See you at the 'Con!

(this also posted in the Civ4-MP forum, heh)

Well we'll be there all weekend, why limit it?

Lets do a tournament for all poly members (and Firaxians if they want).

And then an exhibition game of 4 on 4 Firaxians vs. poly staff and/or nonstaff.

I don't think a demogame would work well in person. There is too much plotting that takes time to do. Doing it all in real time would just lead to problems I'd think. Every 5 seconds taking a vote among 4-5 people huddled around a computer where to move their worker, ick.

But a running tourney could go well. Play all the early brackets on Friday, Saturday, Sunday throughout the day, and then Saturday night do the Firaxian exhibition game, and then Sunday night do the poly final tourney.

(or if people are gonna be leaving sunday, then hold that earlier)

The early brackets could run concurrently with whatever workshops and such we want to do during the day. Unless the computers are going to be set up at the Firaxis office and we will only have access to them for a limited time. I'd suggest we find a place in the hotel to hook them up so it could be an ongoing event.

The problem with that is that the schedule will be rather more packed than I think you're assuming; and the room space wouldn't be conducive to doing both (scheduled events) and (tournament)...

Like to see a list of scheduled events first. As for playing against Firaxians, that would be cool but they should wipe the field with us. (I'm an MP virgin anyway )

          I agree

          Just to place some input

#1-Start and stop time/dates of Apolycon06(i.e.Friday noon to Sunday 5 pm)

#2-"Scheduled" events and the tourney around it

#3-Probably very important, how long will we have access to the PC's? (# of days and also timeframe each day, like 7 am til 5 pm or whatever)

#4-BHG is involved, will there be any RON or RON T & P gameplay?

#5-Mentioned bringing our own PC's, with all going on, what kind of security will we have over the PC;'s setting there unattended to, I for one have a pretty substantial investment, just asking is all

          Thanks

            Fair point.

This should be published sometime this month.

Is there going to be an opportunity for other, non-PC gaming sessions? That is, perhaps a tabletop gaming session or the like? Or maybe I should wait to read the schedule before asking?
I make movies. Come check 'em out.

I'm going to see if the wife will let me go. This would be a great opportunity to gain some experience.

I would invite her. Make it part of a larger vacation:

"Honey, I've got an opportunity to go to the DC/Baltimore area this July, do you want to take advantage of it? It's a 1.5 day IT/gaming convention featuring some really big names in the industry, and I thinking that we should make it part of a larger 6-7 day vacation.

Except for that Friday night and Saturday, you and I will have plenty of time to see DC or Baltimore or Philadelphia or New York City.* However, during that day and a half, it'll be Guy Time. Sound fun?"

Trust me - it'll work. Just make the decision that you want to go and ask her what you need to do to get it done.

I mean, I just one day told my wife, as I was exiting the car to run into Kinko's for a couple of minutes, about the convention and the trip to Baltimore...

"Don't make any Thanksgiving plans, we're going to Baltimore."
                      "What? Why?"
"It's for the convention. I'll tell you about it when I get back."
                      "What convention?"

                      :sound of car door shutting:

Anyway, surely you can find a way to sell it to your wife!

*Note that I have no idea where you live - if you live in Baltimore, the above would do nothing but worry her as you started spewing nonsense.

I'd get a as soon as I mentioned gaming. I'd also be asked who would keep an eye on the 7 kids while I was having fun. It wouldn't be impossible but I got time to work on it. I live about a 1 - 1 1/2 hour drive north.
