About 85 to 90% of the time, I'll play as the research-heavy University. During most of the other 10 to 15%, I'll occasionally play as the Morganites, Peacekeepers, Gaians, Cyborgs, Usurpers, or a custom faction that is very much like the University. Every once in a great while, I'll consider one of the other factions, like maybe the Pirates, but the Believers I wouldn't dare play at. The Caretakers I also prefer not to play as because they can't transcend.

Any and all. They all have there nuances in order to be played to their potential. The fun is finding them. Learn to play one faction properly then move on to the next faction.
Prolly my fav factions now are Fungus Boy, Sparta, and Believers.

hmm, just started a game as the believers. I must say I'm impressed. Why waste time developing land and bases when you can just take what you want +25% on attack just screams for takeover.
Maybe I was lucky. I started next to the university. They were easy pickings. I quickly stole my way up to gatling lasers then laid waste to them. The bonus to probe helps out here. I went fundamentalist of course.
But get this. Even my laser rovers were successful against them. That's what high morale and +25% on attack will do for ya.
If it weren't for the godawful color and faction leader picture, I think I would have a new favourite faction.
I do like builder factions as I said above. But I have a new found respect for the attackers like the believers.
When I started playing I loved the Spartans cause I LOOOOVE extortion

All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to greater danger. Yep believers rule in early rush. Your kind of screwed though if you are on an island with no one to conquer or even probe.
Thats one of the reasons why Spartans are a good next choice for conquering. You are one tech away from D:Flex if you get stuck on an island.

yeah I would have been hurting if I had been on an island. I chose intermediate water (the middle setting) this game. Standard sized map. I started near the gaians, and fairly close to the University. U.N. was crammed in south of the University and the Spartans were way to the north east beyond an isthmus.
speaking of. I did try a map of planet the other day. But I'm not a big fan of that map.
edit: well I finished this game. I must say I love the believers
Being a conquerer is much better for my lower attention span . I started a game the other day as the peacekeepers, but I haven't finished it. The peacekeepers are so boring. And I hate it when I get double votes yet I still can't get elected planetary governor .
Plus I'm hooked on standard sized maps now. Large and huge maps just take too long.
