  • There are currently four ships which require a name: the GH transport cruiser, the MT coastguard, the VV coastguard, and the Messenan laser cruiser.

As besides the Greek and Roman mythology I assume we're also drawing from Norse mythology (we have a spirit after all). That's why I've surfed the internet a bit for some Norse versions of Greek-Roman gods we've already used for ship names.

Some options for the transport cruiser:

Since we've got a transport named Pegasus:
    • Aarvak - the horse drawing the sun’s chariot in Norse mythology. He has been identified with the Greek Pegasus.
    • Alsvid(r): the other horse drawing the chariot

Or if we want to keep the "messenger god" theme such as with the Hermes and Mercury:
    • Heimdall - The guardian of the bridge to Asgard and the messenger of the gods. He is the god of light and protection.
    • Hermod - The messenger of the gods. Often equated to the Greek god Hermes. (I guess this one sounds too similar to Hermes though)
    • Valkyrie - The battle-maidens, who choose the best warriors to join Odin in Valhalla to wait for the battle Ragnarok. They are also the messengers of Odin.

As for the combat ships, perhaps we could go with a "war god" or "sea god" theme?

    Sea gods:
    • Poseidon: Greek
    • Neptunus: Roman variety
    • Aegir - the god of the sea in Norse mythology. He was both worshipped and feared by sailors, for they believed that Aegir would occasionally appear on the surface to take ships, men and cargo alike, with him to his hall at the bottom of the ocean. Sacrifices were made to appease him, particularly prisoners before setting sail.
    • Njord The Norse god of winds, sea and fire. He brings good fortune at sea and in the hunt.

    War gods: Mars, Ares, Odin.

Then there's of course still the SCC Enterprise, as that name wasn't used for the SCC GeneralTacticus.

    Any preferences?

    • We could honour our inactive members with the Laser Cruisers (eg we could name the new one the SCC MajorJamski, while we could use the seagod theme for our coastguard protection vessels.

And we also have a fifth vessel - the podpopped slow Unity transport (maybe SNC Aarvak) with the cruiser transport taking the "messenger" theme?

      So I suggest:
      • SCC MajorJamski for the second laser cruiser
      • SCC Aegir for the Minas Tirith CoastGuard Cutter
      • SCC Njord for the Messena cutter
      • SNC Aarvak for the podpopped transport foil
      • SNC Heimdall for the probe-carrying GH transport cruiser

Though Jamski isn't even a member of the Federation anymore - see here. Should we then call a ship after him? Personally, if I had to make a choice, I'd rather honour active members than inactive ones who hardly ever posted here.

I see I have been remiss in not following the general SCDG threads

          Good point.

Maybe just limit the "naming after a player" to GT, to honour GeneralTacticus' role (with Maniac) in founding our faction

Perhaps then we leave the coastguard cutters as seagods - or maybe follow the US custom of naming vessels after states and cities (eg the Lexington, the Missouri, etc) and adapt it by naming our cutters after the naval bases they came from (so we'd have the SCC Argos, the SCC Gytheum, the SCC Messena, etc) - it'd also make it easier to keep track of them for role playing purposes

Then our more offensive cruisers could be sea gods, with perhaps our first Chaos or Shard plasma or silksteel cruiser being awarded the Enterprise label

          • Sure if you prefer.
Would that then be the SCC Minas Tirith and the SCC Vladivostok? (Hmm, I wonder what "Rule the seas or "Rule the waves" would be in Russian)

On another note, as a second offensive elite unit has been trained in Laconia (the Olympian missile infantry), the name Spartan Kel no longer refers to only one unit. That's why I'm thinking about renaming the impact Kel to "Raoul's Roughnecks" in my coming Unit Inventory update. I'm still wondering about a fitting name for the new missile infantry though. Perhaps "Olympian Guard" or something.

            • A friendly person gave me the following answer:

The Russian word for Control/Manage/Rule would be "Управление" (Upravlyeniye), and so "Upravlyeniye Moryamii", but that does come out as "Management of the Seas", which sound strange. Not recommended.

What you are looking for (and indeed, what Vladivostok is) is "master", not "control". Thus, you would say "Vladyelyets Morei" for Master of the Seas.
The problem with "Master of the Waves" is that waves can mean many things, and so to say "Master of the Seawaves" you would say "Vladyelyets Morskih Voln", Master of the Sea Waves. I would just go with "Master of the Sea" if I were you.

Of course, "Vladyelyets" looks strange in Latin You might be able to get away with "Vladelyets" or "Vladyelets", but if you try "Vladelets" I will come and hurt you
I'm not sure of the SMACX character limit, so "Vladmorei", "Vlad Morei", etc would be fine. "Vladimorei" sounds neat, too, I suppose.

BTW: Vladivostok comes from "Vladyelets Vostoka", which means Master of the East. One could also look at 'Vladivostok" and think "(the) Master and the East" (Vlad(yelyets) i vostok). Or if we take it to be "Vlad" (name), it could mean "Vlad and the East", but this would never be how one would translate it.
              Just trivia

                • Cool!

Btw, our military is expanding rapidly these days. There are three other one-of-a-kind units that we could give a special name: the new Ogre, the FB missile rover, and the amphib missile synthrover.

Edit: Oh yeah, now my exams are over, I finally found the time to update the Base and Unit Inventory.

                      • Sounds good.

We have 4 noodle squadrons in training - names?

Plus, what to call our 3rd Ogre - and the Unity Rover down there with R-112?

                          • You could name the noodles after birds of prey? Or mythical flying beasts (Chimera, Valkyrie, Harpy, Dragon, Pegasis)?

                            • Or how about the 3 Harpies of ancient Greek legend?

In other words, the OKYPETE, AELLOPOS and KELAINO squadrons for our first three (then we can follow with the parents and offspring)

See the extract from The Greek Mythology Encyclopedia:

THE HARPYIAI were personifications of whirlwinds or storm winds - the swiftness and suddenness of winds being one of their chief characteristics. They were called the hounds of Zeus and caused human beings to disappear without a trace.

The Harpyiai were usually depicted as winged women
