I feel that it is only a psychological effect: after all, all attachments in a thread are not loaded to a person's computer when viewing it (that'd be a horrible design flaw), but only the text is loaded as with other threads. That means this thread is probably far smaller a strain on bandwidth than, say, the Rec Commons.
