Forward Error Correction - its what is used in data communication these days. Basically the message has redundant bits in it, so if the receiver receives most of the message they can work out the missing bits from what they received. This works regardless of where the error occured. It also lets the receiver know if a packet is errored beyond recovery, in which case it can ask for a retransmission.

The point is if you can get some information through some of the time, you can get the whole message through.

But because of the severe sunspot activity, it could just be so rigged that you would require a million retransmissions that could take you the entire course of the sunspot activity period. Heck it may even take you one turn just to tell them that you need a retranmission.

And with a needle jet you could send it by POST in mere hours, not a whole year...

So perhaps no contact before Doc Air Power?
But you can also SHIP it too can't you? That means Doc Flexibility. Then you can also argue for Doc Mobility ...

I say the technologies are too complex and it will take too many paper boxes for them to be sent by post. Plus we'll kill the few trees we just planted not long ago ... This is of course assuming we have not discovered recordable CDs.

Needlejets can apparently only fly 10 squares per year though.

                No contact.

                It'll make things more interesting.

Contact - it keeps things interesting.

No, but no interfactional cable-connections are layed I'm aware off, so no joy even if we had it.

My view regarding sunspot activity is that there should be no tech trade possible nor change in diplomatic status, except under a limited number of circumstances and methods. For instance, if you are in a truce/treaty situation with an AI, even under sunspots you can demand withdrawal of their units. They may or may not comply, but sometimes the diplomatic status does change .

Or if you were about to backstab a human treaty partner with a well developed aerial, army and naval assault, wouldn't their diplo status change when you did so ?

Likewise if we probe an AI faction or human faction during sunspots what happens in that situation?. Vendetta in some cases but if so not reversible until the end of sunspots. ( bit of a Ecs penalty on the DA's)

But diplomatic discussions via email , chat room or in a forum, between factions that have met in game should be allowed. Also coordinating battle plans should also be allowed.

How about we allow contact after Optical Computers then?

Yes we really need to consider this situation for the next game, if DAs will be a team.

Can't we simply not allow sunspot activities?
