Producing enough meat to feed a person for a year requires 25 acres of land. To feed that person with only vegetables requires 1.5 acres. That means we can leave a lot more fungus untouched.

Depends on the sort of ecology you're in

Wrong, Planet has a broad sort of ecology, with all sort of plants and animal life, but the fungus prevails.
