  • PBEM in Civ V

Has anyone tried this out? I just started it up through the Hotseat menu and set passwords, but I'm waiting on my friend to test it out and see if it works for him. Already I'm a bit annoyed that the only way to exit after saving following your turn is to use Alt + F4 and close civ completely.

I know this is more of a multiplayer topic, but that forum seems even more dead than the general one.

Are you serious PBEM!? You'll probably make 100 turns per _year_. Unless you have some interesting scenario with immediate action pending, this is totally boring.

Is this a new concept for you? People have been playing PBEM in all the versions of civ stretching back to to at least Civ II (probably MGE). It was a pain in the ass that it wasn't included with vanilla Civ V, and in reality it's just a bastardized form of Hotseat.

I have no interest in Civ V multiplayer as it is in the game right now (simultaneous turns), plus my internet connection is too slow to allow for that anyways. Plus my friend lives across the country, so take into account all of those things and PBEM is the only option for playing a game of civ with my buddy. And whether or not it takes a long time to play out the game is irrelevant. The point is to play against a human and to goof around with a friend. And it's only as boring as any civ game ever is, it's just played out over a much longer time frame.

You mean those times when we listened to tapes and waited in front of phone booths? ... perhaps with a walkman already.

PBEM is dead and your friend is gone.

Find some new friends, life goes on.

Yup sorry if I misinterpreted your first post. There are a ton for whom that is their honest reaction when they hear that someone wants to play PBEM. When the notes on the patch that added Hotseat came out on the 2k forums some people that asked if they were adding PBEM were pounced on by people who couldn't understand why you would want such a thing. I got the feeling that a lot of them were younger players that had never played it and just could not fathom the advantages of playing in such a way. So again, sorry if I was a bit serious in my reply, but as we all know it can be tough to tell between sarcasm and ignorance on the internet

Is anyone interested in PBEM game? The nice part about them is you can have several going at once (poly-civ-ous?). Or we could do an old-school type of PBEM wherein you all play one civ and play 10-20 turns or so and then send the game on to the next player. Kind of a hassle, but you can get some funny outcomes. I remember one time we played a game of ToT as the aliens (!) and a lot of ridiculousness ensued.
