  • Are 1 tile island cities worth the effort?

In my recent game I have found myself on the ass end of the map relegated to island hopping (which is not my favorite scenario, I'm not a fan of Navy games). I have seen many 1 tile islands nearby that contain resources that I wouldn't mind having... marble, spices, etc etc. I am just wondering if they are worth plonking a city down on in the middle of the freaking ocean. With no supporting land tiles I can't have any supporting land/arty units to help defend in case war breaks out. So I think I would have to park a warship in or around the city at all times. Plus thinking it would take forever to get anything built without hammer resources.

Now oil/coal/uranium would probably be no brainers. But luxury resources?

I'm putting this game on the back burner until I can figure out if it's worth continuing. I don't really want to get into a series of 1 tile island cities and having to support a huge navy to defend them.

    Thoughts?

No, not unless it has a resource on it and/or a luxury resource off the coast. It will grow too slowly and you'll need to build a harbor which means 50-100 turns before it's worth anything at all but even then you'll still have to build happiness improvements in the city so IMO it just isn't worth the effort.

Yet the AI puts cities on every single one, resources or not.

Yes, still as silly as in IV but at least you don't have to hunt them all down to conquer a civ now.

If it has 3 resources (one on land and two at sea, or three at sea) within range, I'll put a city on it. Buy the harbour, send workboats, build or buy a seaport and its good. May also be handy for staging air units later on, depending on location.

          Single resource? Not worth it.

What are you talking about? In Civ4 you'd just take their main cities then turn the rest into a vassal where as now you literally have to hunt down every little city including the ones on the one tile ice island in the arctic.

I believe what Rah is referring to is that now you just have to take out the capital to satisfy the conquest victory condition.

OK, that's true but but that only counts if you're going for a conquest victory and take everyone else's capital (or at least someone does).
