Except there was also an undocumented change in CIV IV preventing siege units from carrying out amphibious attacks.

I don't remember how I heard about that one, but I did so wondering just how undocumented it was.

I figured it out the first time I tried it and it didn't work

Yes, and I do remember that it wasn't documented at first.

Heh, I remember that. That nerf pissed me off. I was using catapult "rushes" at the time.

Or bee-line steel. A stack of cannons was basically unstoppable. Especially prior to the flanking damage.

I am curious...is CIV V worth buying? I have not bought it yet, just reading about it.

Hard to say... some people like it, and many are still whining about it.
I personally find it a tad boring with very little replayability... but others disagree.

I think it all depends on what you are expecting and what you want in a game.
I'm still playing FAR more Civ IV MP than Civ V.

Civ5 is a mixed bag right now. Yes, I've spent about 200 hours playing the game so I guess I got my money's worth out of it but it just isn't as fun or addictive as Civ4 was/is. On the other hand, it did take two expansion packs to get Civ4 up to all time great status and I'm not sure Civ5 can climb that high but with an expansion pack or two it could become a really good game (but probably not a great game). $50 isn't that much money so my guess is you'll get your money's worth of enjoyment out of it as is and when the expansion packs come along then you'll be set to see it really shine.

200 hours is your moneys worth for any game!

I have played about 4 hours and I'm not really feeling like I want to play it more.

But partly that's 'cause I have other new games.

Gee... Oerdin and I CAN agree on something

Civ IV wasn't really all that good out of the box... but after the two XP's, it became the greatest game in the series.
Who really knows at this point where Civ V will rank... only time and XP's will tell.

I agree with what has been said already.
Some people really like the game and some people really don't like the game, so my advice to you would be to try out the demo. The demo is very short, but does give a quick feeling on the game and you will have an idea of what to expect. The demo doesn't show how bad the AI is, but be aware that the AI is very bad (but hopefully that would be fixed soon)

I bought the game on release date and I'm still playing it almost every day. Almost spent 300 hours on it, so I have got my moneys worth
Sure, the game is not that great yet, but as what have already been told, Civ IV wasn't that great either on release date, but is now by many considered the best Civ game ever. Maybe after some XPs and some patches, Civ V will close in on Civ IV
This space is empty... or is it?

Yes, I have been reading that AI is terrible. but I wonder if that is something that can be fixed in a patch or an XP. It sounds like a major overhaul of the AI is in order. Well, ui will wait until i get back the USA this summer to make a decision about it. although, I think i like the more intelligent warfare aspect. but if the AI is dumb........

A lot of that 200 hours was me just leaving my computer on, doing other stuff, and coming back later because I didn't want to have to wait through the intro movie again. Luckily they've now fixed the intro movie problem.

Then you probably shouldn't say "I've spent about 200 hours playing the game."

This is probably a little late (I am not reading much on Civ 5 anymore)...

But for whomever was saying it was too hard or too complex, or required too much processor power to write a good AI, I offer up this:

Cevo (free version of Civ II with a kick ass AI)

In both games it is the player that gets the "cheats" against the machine, not vice versa. And really that is the reason the AI sucks so badly in the CIV series. Design the AI for "perfect" play for each of 5 - 10 different winning strategies, so that it will beat any player almost all the time. Then give the player various bonuses to counteract the AI's near perfection. The easier the setting, the larger the bonuses. Then you will have a truely challenging single player game.
