Strategic Resources
Strategic resources are an important concept in Civilization V. Like in earlier games of the series, strategic resources are not visible at the start of the game: they require knowledge of a particular technology before they appear on a map.
Strategic resources allow you to build certain units and buildings. When you construct an improvement on a strategic resource hex, it provides you with a limited number of those resources, and these are consumed when you construct the associated units or buildings. For example, you use one iron resource to build each swordsman unit. If you don’t have one iron available, you can’t construct the swordsman. The resource becomes available to you once more if the unit or building is destroyed.
You can trade strategic resources with other civilizations.
List of Strategic Resources
There are six different strategic resources in the game.
Horses. Revealed by Animal Husbandry in the Ancient Era, horses are required for many units in the early- and middle-game such as Chariot Archers, Horsemen, Knights, and Cavalry. Horses remain a valuable resource until the Industrial era, when the invention of Armored Units replaces Mounted Units.
Iron. Revealed by Iron Working in the Classical Era, iron is a very important resource in the early and middle eras. Iron is required to produce powerful units such as Swordsmen, Catapults, and Frigates.
Coal. Revealed by Scientific Theory in the Renaissance Era, coal is necessary to produce a couple items such as the powerful Ironclad, and the Factory building.
Oil. Revealed by Biology in the Industrial Era, oil is a very important resource, necessary to build many units such as Tanks, Fighters, Battleships, and Submarines.
Aluminum. Revealed by Electricity in the Industrial Era, aluminum is required to build most of the powerful Modern Era military units. In addition to units such as the Jet Fighter, Rocket Artillery, Modern Armor, and Helicopter Gunship, aluminum is required to build the Hydro Plant and Spaceship Factory buildings.
Uranium. The last strategic resource to be discovered, uranium is revealed by Atomic Theory in the Modern Era. Uranium is required to build the most devastatingly powerful units in the game such as the Atomic Bomb and Nuclear Missile, as well as the Nuclear Plant building. Oh, and the Giant Death Robot, of course.
I am going to say it very plainly: Strategic Resources in Civ V are awesome. Limiting the quantitiy of units that each tile of a resource can support creates many situations where civilizations will go to war over the resources. Going to war with your neighbor because you want to get access to more uranium just feels right!
....
um...
Doesn't it seem weird to anyone that there are only six strategic resources?
