Maybe ION based netbooks might run it.

They did a talk with Intel a while back where they discussed what they've done with the engine, and talked about optimizing the game to run acceptably on low-end hardware with Intel graphics. Perhaps I'm remembering incorrectly and they didn't say netbooks specifically, but definitely the Intel graphics part, which pretty much any dedicated graphics card would blow out of the water.Originally posted by Brael View PostI seriously doubt a netbook will run civ 5 unless it's a brand new one a couple of years from now. The netbook I have was released at the end of 2009 so it's a fairly current model. It's unable to run civ 4 due to the video card. I can run some games on it, but anything released in the last couple of years will have horrible frame rates.
A person with a low-end computer like that would almost certainly want to stick with the strategic view, but that's for another discussion.

This is my thought exactly. Plus I'd rather be able to spread the cost over a few paychecks, not drop down money for both hardware and the game all at once. A reasonable person might argue I don't *need* this game on the very first day. But that person will be the first to be sacrificed to hurry production.Originally posted by stevel View PostDownside is that doesn't give me much time to build a new machine before the release date.

The reviewers complain that performace was stuttering even with a much better set up:
It looks like Civilization 5 has been very, very poorly optimized if it's having trouble running on a rig like that.We did our primary testing for the game on a home-built PC with an Intel Core i7-975 CPU , 6GB of DDR3 RAM, and an ATI Radeon HD 5870 video card (and the Catalyst 10.7 driver), running at resolutions of both 1,680 by 1,050 (in windowed mode) and 1,920 by 1,200 (full-screen), with all the detail settings at their highest values. Performance was flawless in the early part of the game, but began stuttering during the later, more frantic sections of the game.Last edited by Dinner; August 5, 2010, 12:04.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

If you look at what they write, they say they used the max detail settings, and it only began stuttering in the late game, when all civ games has had problems. I honestly doubt it's that bad. Also, in game development, optimization often comes last, so it might not be that bad when it comes out.-Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.-Isaiah 41:10
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made - Psalms 139.14a
