I really don't like that you can't get the extra civs (preorder or deluxe) by buying the special edition.

Mysterious. Just like a good game of civ should be.

Steam adds absolutely nothing that I want (and I do want DRM personally, what with being a game developer these days...). And it does come with the risk of being blocked from playing the offline, single player game I want to.
If I wanted multiplayer, steam would be by far the best choice, but I don't.
Actually, as a further example, the first website I looked at this morning (twenty sided tale):
... a story about how steam has contrived to stop him accessing the game in either offline or online mode. It's hardly the first such story.

Just what I need, toy soldiers and civ music. We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

Good point. By the same logic, it may also be worthwhile for those of us who wont pre-order from steam, to wait for the inevitable expansion packs that will contain the Babylonians (and anything else that's missing from the initial release). Personally, I cant understand the logic of these tiered, "special", releases. We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI
