I really don't like that you can't get the extra civs (preorder or deluxe) by buying the special edition.

I really don't like that there doesn't seem to be any place that presents features of the different planned versions side by side.

Could that be because there are still MORE versions (with overlapping additional content) to be revealed?

Mysterious. Just like a good game of civ should be.

If only they'd bring out a "single player only absolutely no multiplayer support and no steam requirement" version...

Steam isn't just for multiplayer support... it's mainly for anti piracy and updates
            Keep on Civin'

I hadn't heard a word about the Sumerians. I knew about Babylon being in the Deluxe, but I don't recall reading anything about pre-orders and Sumerians. Anyone have a source on that?

Not Sumerians - Mesopotamia map-pack with Digital pre-order from Steam on either the regular or the Digital Deluxe edition.

There plenty of just as good (online) anti-piracy schemes, better IMHO since they don't force you to log in to steam. I'd rather do updates in my own time by downloading a patch (never used civ4s auto-updater; well I think I did click it once by accident and it crashed the game, but that's not really relevant).

Steam adds absolutely nothing that I want (and I do want DRM personally, what with being a game developer these days...). And it does come with the risk of being blocked from playing the offline, single player game I want to.

If I wanted multiplayer, steam would be by far the best choice, but I don't.

Actually, as a further example, the first website I looked at this morning (twenty sided tale):

... a story about how steam has contrived to stop him accessing the game in either offline or online mode. It's hardly the first such story.

My mistake. I still don't like that getting the special edition basically means losing out on civs and map packs though.

Just what I need, toy soldiers and civ music.
We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

Yeah, and? Bottom line it makes consumers hesitant to preorder, which is self defeating, since that's the very purpose of adding the Babylonians to the Steam version, no?

Good point. By the same logic, it may also be worthwhile for those of us who wont pre-order from steam, to wait for the inevitable expansion packs that will contain the Babylonians (and anything else that's missing from the initial release). Personally, I cant understand the logic of these tiered, "special", releases.
