Civ 1 on a roomate's Mac laptop with a greyscale monitor. Civ graphics have been downhill ever since.

That got me hooked on the series and I've played Civ II, Alpha Centauri, CTP 1, Civ 3 and Civ 4 since then. Civ 5 will depend on the system requirements, initial feedback and my financial situation at the time.

I'm a relative newbie - only the third person to start with Civ3 out of 68. And not on an ancient computer, either - on a Pentium 4 at 2.66 GHz with 524,288 KB of RAM. That actually wasn't intentional - I'd planned to play it on a Pentium II at 450 MHz with 128 MB of RAM, but for whatever reason Civ3 wouldn't play on that computer (though it does now), and it wasn't too hard to convince my dad that our 4-year-old+ computer was fairly obsolete. I went on to play Civ3 for a good part of the next year, devouring the Civilopedia and manual several times over in the process.

I've played less than one game of Alpha Centauri, but that was long after Civ4 came out. I also downloaded a "Civ Zero" for mobile phones (also long after starting Civ3), but my phone's screen is too small to play it. It seems to play okay in the emulator on its site, so perhaps someone with a phone with a halfway decent resolution would be able to play it. The creator posted a link to his site in the CFC Other Civ Sites forum a year or more ago. It's supposed to be a Civ1 clone.

My first Civ was Civ1 of course. My first Civ-like game was Empire (@1978). There may have been similar board games before that.

            Yes!

Too bad it wouldn't allow units to cross it though

My story is similar as many of you stated before. I started playing civ1 when a young kid worked in the summer at my work. He had a 3,5" disk with civ1 on it and asked if I wanted to try. Got hooked ever since.

Only Civ IV I never really played. My PC was not good enough. It was extremely slow on my PC. So I sticked with Civ 3. Now my new PC is finally going to be delivered, so now I will have to play Civ IV and soon after that play Civ V! :-)

Did not play CIV IV because of performance issues
New PC arrived about 13th of August, so CIV IV is finally playable for me! :)

My brother bought an amiga 500 (and upgraded it 1 full megabyte!!!) and Civ1 was one of the games he had grabbed, It wasnt brand new when i started, a few months at least, but my brother never got to use his computer again....

It was always my goal to have railroads before 1 AD.

I never ralroaded the oceans, but i do remeber using transport trains to move a unit across the world in 1 turn.

Civ1 downloaded from local BBS when I was 13-14. My dad's computer was still dos based so I had no mouse and had to learn all the hot keys.

I first played Civ 1 in elementary school when we were allowed to play games in computer class every Friday. I believe I was in the fifth grade, so that must have been around 1998.

I also liked: "Give me more soldiers Noble leader, and we will turn the rivers red, WITH BLOOD!" With overacting emphasis on the last two words.

And when some other advisor asked for something, he would prompt: "How can we defend our cities with that? BUILD CITY WALLS FIRST!"

Maybe I will play civ2 again, just for the advisors....

I thought I answered this before, maybe it was another thread. Civ 1 on a mac II with a big colour monitor (paid for by the lab of course).

Civ2. Used to play it like crazy. Sadly, no Civ1. Heh, I didn't know such a game even existed back then. If I had, well, school would've suffered even more.
