Except that nuclear waste is encased in virtually indestructable containers and can then stored in man-made caverns miles below the surface in uninhabited areas like deserts (i.e. Yucca Mountain).

Nuclear waste disposal seems to be scientifically possible. However, it seems to be politically impossible in the near- and long-term. Yucca Mountain is closed and even nuclear-capable dictatorships have the NIMBY problem. If you wish to build the facility, expect lots of local resistance as long as it operates. Note a lot of states are short on huge deserts with mountains.

Anybody know if electricity actually is an issue in the developing Civ V? In Civ IV and earlier the railroads sort of functioned as communication lines too; but electric lines did not exist.

Anybody think tranformer farms sound like sewer systems from an, ahem, earlier civ?

There's a disconnect between all the "green" movement, the emphasis on renewal energy and alternate technologies, and the realities of it. Production of lithium, shale oil, nuclear, and wind power all have their issues. Heck, the U.S. can't even seem to do coastal oil drilling because people don't want oil platforms off *their* beaches. As you say, NIMBY. But, I would expect after the past 10-15 years, hopefully the lightbulb will begin to glow at least a little dimly to realize mideast oil has its issues as well.

Hydro Electric Dams are one of the most powerful powerplants available. Like three gorges dam, it is more than 10 times more powerful than the most powerful nuclear plant (building at Olkiluoto): 22,500 vs 1,600 MGW

            Well,
german players had electricity in Civ from Civ 1 on

(although it was rather because in every part of Civ the in the powergraph the word "power" was mistranslated into the german word "electrizität" instead of using a term that would be more correct in this context, like "Stärke" for example [something that regularly lead newer players to wonder, how it is possible that stone age civilizations have electricity ])
