What is the least necessary feature of each Civ game?

Civ3- The whole game wasted disk space, but it was somehow fun.
Civ4- The Golden age caused by GP.
Civ 1: Locking zones of control, no way to stop people from building cities everywhere.
Civ 2: Same. The advisors were pretty, but not necessary at all.
Civ 3:
Scientific Great Leaders.
Also: Multiplayer.
Also: the way it went BACKWARD in terms of civics/government versus the system they had in SMAC (and again in Civ IV).
Also: Submarines versus automove
Also: the way you had no idea if your city was about to flip due to culture or what.
Also: Pyramids as the universal granary? C'mon, everyone knows Pyramids give you access to every known government! (That's why Egypt is using Police State.)
Civ 4: The way you hear the jarring chord for a new event, then have to wait five seconds until the text telling you how some other civ screwed you out of a wonder/etc. Then the way you have to wait another five seconds until the next jarring chord. I wish you could just scroll through a list of "major events" or something like that. A pop-up box with a scroll bar would be the best.
P.S. Is it just me, or does the OP actually pre-date Civ IV?

I agree on the jarring chord, or chords actually. Always a bit tense when you hear the declaration of war and have to wait to see if it is on you or someone else.

It really helped when I discovered that by hitting CTRL+TAB at the beginning of each turn, all of the events of that round would automatically be displayed.
I just wish I could turn off the jarring chord....
