shouldn't be a pre-requisite though. How long had vocational education gone on before even them? Apprentice carpenters and fisherman were being educated, no? So it was only a matter of time following the "research" of writing that apprentice writers would become commonplace.
The fact that Religion powered most of the schooling doesn't mean it was required before schooling could exist.
    Concrete, Abstract, or Squoingy?

Ok, not all in the tech tree is logical. Neither it is, btw, in other Civ games and in civ clones like CtP series (not to talk about SMAC/X). Or why do I need slave labor to build mines? Yea I know, that slaves worked in mines, but were they really necessary? Or ballistics for archers? The first bows were very short ranged weapons and not used indirectly like later the longbows. Or, Civ3 again, when exactly was it in history, when Invention was invented? Don't take all so serious, the techs had to be linked in some or other way. May be there are some logical blunders in the tech trees, but none of them is game breaking.

It's a game for god's sake. Sure, it's based on reality, but there are heroic abstractions everywhere in the game, and you have to accept that.

Civ1: Phalanx beats Battleship. Too much micromanaging.

Civ2: Too much micromanaging. AI gangs up on #1 player. Ghandi plopping down a city in the middle of my empire.

CtP1: Too much micromanaging. Dumb AI. Confusing interface.

CtP2: Dumb AI. Ai doesn't heed "get out of my territory" threat.

Civ3: City flipping unrealistic. No choice between Male/Female leaders. Bad leader choices. (Cleo and Joan)

Civ1: Super belligerent, myopic aggression from certain AI civs.

Civ2: Defending military unit dies? So does your entire stack of units. That's a lot of pressure for whoever is nominated to fight for the defense!

Civ3: Uncoordinated AI naval strategy, submarine bug, modern era tedious, radical changes from each release/patch (Civ3 vanilla, PTW, C3C, and all the patches done between releases)

            -----------

            Something I liked...

CtP1: When moving a "Samuari" unit, the sound file would play For the Shogun!!!. I really that!

Civ 1: free wonders for AIs. This drove me nuts, and caused me to reload more than once.
Civ 2: caravans. Grossly overpowered, and the interface was very poorly designed.
Civ 3: too much micromanagement, a very small set of optimal strategies.

civ1: can't say. never played it.
                civ2: ICS, too much micromanagement.
                civ3: cartoony feel.
                ctp2: weird special units.
                SMAC: terrible map graphics.
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

Civ1: Poor Graphics (it's been so long since I've played, I honestly don't remember anything aside from the obvious)

Civ2: Rampant computer cheating, limited diplomacy, and an often illogical AI

Civ3: Some computer cheating, limited diplomacy, and a Powergaming, Super-sprawling, and Irrational AI.

                      SMAC: Poor Graphics.

Where to start, where to start...

                        civ3
Infinite rails, simplistic and tedious 1-to-1 combat, extreme late game micromanagement issues that could be fixed via a simple lockstacking feature...

                        CTP series
Extremely poor military AI in unmodded state.

                        SMAC
Graphics and some of the same micromangement issues listed in civ3.
                        Great ingame atmosphere though

No, it's Tauron, one of the wizards from Master of Magic. It *does* bear a certain resemblance to the merciless one, now that you mention it.

                              what i hate about civ

civ 1: AI battleships appear in 4000 BC. AI militia unit defeats player's combat tank. Air units keep running out of fuel. No warning given to the player. Triremes keep sinking in the open sea. No warning given to the player. AI is able to find player's civ location no matter where player is. AI builds trading routes with other AI civs except players. AI keeps stealing technology and buying units by teleporting diplomats from one location to another.

civ 2: Air units keep running out of fuel. No warning given to the player. Triremes keep sinking in the open sea. No warning given to the player. AI is able to find player's civ location no matter where player is how how the player builds the scenario to hide player's civ from AI civs. AI civs tend to gang up on player civ Still the best civ ever!

SMAC: No complaints. Love the graphics, gameplay, unit upgrades, faction advantages and faction disadvantages. Best ever!

civ 3: Hate the graphics more than anything else in the game! Hate the new idea of not being able to irrigate near the sea. Hate the way AI civ keeps crossing all over player civ's territory just to get to one small empty land in the middle of nowhere. Hate the advantages AI civs keep having over the player's civ:- better starting location surrounded by resources, etc .... Pollution, corruption is the worst concept in the game, cannot buy wonders, .... Worst civ ever!

Battleships in 4000 BC? I've never seen that. Might it be because I never played higher than Prince?
