      Because they are very unbalanced.....far too powerful. In principle this is a problem anyway, but add in an AI that doesn't appreciate their power and you have problems.

        You take the words right out of my mouth, If I can have one base producing 1000+ labs, then the game is BROKEN ! But I still love it.

                Civ1: Settler defeating my battleship.
                Civ2: I haven't played that game.
                Civ3: At first it was the corrupted shields. Now when I'm used to it, the worst thin is that I can't win on emperor level
                CTP: I haven't played that game either.
                CTP2: I don't know, I haven't played this game enough. Perhaps the overall interface is a bit weird.
                SMAC/SMAX: Alien lifeforms.
                I'm not a complete idiot: some parts are still missing.

                    On civ3 AI at least the AI is smart enough to expand a bit. Seems to me that should be an improvement. I haven't played it yet. I have a copy sitting here but haven't gotten around to playing it yet due to too much RL and Clash of Civs dev. needs.

                          Civ1: My settler could destroy an entire civ if I found it early enough. (It was a combat unit with 0 attack, so it could occupy an empty city.)
                          Civ2: can't really remember what I thought was wrong with it, but I stopped playing shortly after getting it so it must have annoyed me.
                          Civ3: Hey its Alpha Centari! Oh, wait they managed to make the AI even more annoying! That and combat before the modern age sucks! Use the Balancer mod for awsome bronze age warfare.

                              SMAC too sci-fi I always wonedred if i owuld like it more if it was modded(text and graphics) into a civ setting. i'e change metwork nodes to schools or something similar.
                              Civ3 I like it- needs a bigger tech tree IMO, more diplomacy and quicker trun times on big maps.
                              CTP2 only just started playing so don't want to comment yet
                              Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

                                Civ1: Unbalanced unit A/D/M. ICS. Bad AI.
                                Civ2: Infinite RR movement. Overpowered spies. Bad AI.
                                Civ3: Infinite RR movement. Lack of "real" ZoC. Simplified tech tree. Annoying user interface.
                                SMAC/X: Too futuristic, horrible graphics, bad AI, no "recreate world" feeling.
                                CtP1: Invisible units, too many futuristic stuff, bad AI.
                                CtP2: Invisible units, useless diplomacy and trade, futuristic stuff, no AI. A tad better when modded.

                                Civ3 - Theology required to get Education.
                                You know, that in the early medieval age the monasteries hosted most of the scientific research, and monastery schools were the only ones that existed over centuries, don't you?
