Just played it for the first time. There's no way the guys I know will finish even the simple game in 3 hours. First time through, after 3 hours we just climbed out of the ancient age into the medieval. Lots of fun though. Planning a whole day session soon to really try it out.

There are board and card games that are far more fun "multiplayer" than any computer game I've ever played.

Yeah, but they don't need a 50 pages manual (only Magic: The Gathering, and is for freakies).

I've got a couple of boardgames with lots of rules that could have padded out to 50 pages had they included backstory, screenshots and other trivia. You need to be a student with a week to spare to play them of course

How about "A friend will buy it and there will be 3 of us playing it at Christmas".

The 3 of us play the original Civilization board game a few times a year. Maybe we will change to the PC-based game now.

I don't think it will replace the original Civilisation if you enjoy playing that. The game is quite different conceptually. Hopefully it should give you a nice alternative choice (I wish I knew people prepared to play several games of original Civ a year - once a year is about as much as I manage).

...I'm going to wait on buying this one until the first patch is released. I'd rather not have my dining room table suddenly burst into flames after entering the middle ages...

...or is this the only Multiplayer Civ III that will currently run?

I wonder if an 'over the internet' game could be worked out for this?

I used to play Axis&Allies over the net with AOL years ago, and it worked fine with a GM. ??

Is that the one from Avalon Hill, where you immersed yourself in the Republic of Rome and you had to be a politician and a general at the same time? If that's the one you mean I played it ages ago with friends but it was a cruel game since backstabbing and behind the doors talk/alliances had a direct effect on the game.

Anyway, I actually love board games and I would like to have the Civ Board game along with the original from Avalon Hill but the problem is getting together to play with friends. Especially, since most of my board games are in English or Greek and I live in Germany .

If you have a GM or other method of making combat dice rolls cheatproof then there's no problem about playing by email. There is no retreat from combat or after combat moves so each player's move and fight phase could be resolved in one go. The game board is BIG though so leaving it set up for week(s) could be inconvenient.

Its not like I have a life! I used to do that with my A&A board. And though the A&A AOL group did use GMs for dicerolls and such in the beginning, eventually they developed an online rolling bot to resolve all combat rolls- it worked out great.

BTW, I was at my local hobby shop, and they now have A&A games for JUST Europe, and one for JUST the Pacific. A bit more detailed gameplay and maps it looks like
