Unless the Palidins have guardian wind placed, they ARE toast to elite halfling slingers.

Heh, in SMAC (or Civ generally) I'm a true builder at heart, but in MoM I'm just in love with... Berserkers!

Call me brute, but I like to attack first, and those thrown weapons are just lovely.
True, they are not all-purpose, they are slow and suffer ranged attacks.
They need thus the support of a couple other units.
Eldritch and GuardianWind/ResistElements make them pretty effective against most monsters, not mentioning Flight if you get it.

Anyhow, relating to topic, one of the most dreaded opponents for my Berserkers in the early-mid game, are indeed those pesky Slingers...
I don't exactly know what I mean by that, but I mean it (Holden Caulfield)

See what I mean, slingers can be a pain for a LONG time.

Another nice unit nobody's mentioned yet: Javelineers. Better stats than slingers (4/3/4/5/2 vs. 1/2/2/7/1), cost only 80 gold, can swim. These guys can do a decent job in melee after they run out of missiles.

Disadvantages: only 6 figures, no lucky bonus, cannot be equipped with mithril or adamantium weapons, need a fighter's guild to build.

So, again, inferior to halfling slingers.

I find Javelineers to be an expensive Jack of all trades.

MY favorite was dark elf spearmen also. The ranged magic attack helped tremendously in the early game.

Also, my whole objective, whenever I played, was to make the most incredibly powerful units. One of my favorites was to bring a barbarian settler into the underworld and build a city (I always made sure a city could share an adamantium tile, I would raze any city if it monopolized one) with an adamantium tile in it's radius to make Barbarian Berserkers with adamantium throwing axes.... yeah!

Bah, nothing beats trolls! Especially war trolls since you can just kite the enemey all over the battlefield while you heal

Yep, trolls are great. A lot of shields, hitpoints & swords. And of course, they regenerate (even dead ones after a victorious battle)

Just try war trolls with black channels cast on them
I'm not a complete idiot: some parts are still missing.

If only they wouldn't cost THRICE the normal... (IIRC).
Also, Trolls can't build Alchemist Guilds, so no Mithril or Adamantium for them.
And the only way to get them a Magical weapon is to use 1 pick for Alchemy.

BTW, NeO, I have always played assuming that Myrror was the UPPERworld
                      Is it just me?

Who knows how the planes are connected? I think of Myrror as the nether world, mostly because it's dark.

"I think the real figures probably are about a million or less." - David Irving on the number of Holocaust victims.

Well.... in Baldurs gate dark elves come from the underworld, and Myrror is dark , so I always assumed it to be the underworld..... realistically it's a whole different plane, but , ya know.

                          Hee hee, "realistically".
