I don't play Smac as often as civ, but it is still pretty good.
It has some nice features too.
No Fighting here, this is the war room!

Don't have CivII, but do have CTP.
Both SMAC and CTP have some good features.

As advantages to CTP, I would point the units sounds, battle screen and units diversity, including many special units.
As poor fetures of CTP, i point the complicated direction system (you always have units that wakes up when you don't want, there is no automation to help the player)

the poorest feature of SMAC is the units sounds, you will get bored soon of the too few sounds. Also, the modular system of units design is a good idea, but it ends up with very few different unit types (and they all look the same : the submarine looks just like the cruiser, and the carrier has nearly no differences.). Also, the unavoidable eco-damages keeps ennoying me.
However SMAC also brings a host of nice features : the automation is good (automated exploration, formers even thought they lack an auto plant forests option, the governors...) this saves many time for important things. Also, the four ways of victory are good. The borders of nations clearly appear ulike in CTP. I like the social engeeniring too, you clearly know what you choose, not only some good or bad adjective you don't know what they mean. The different factions, with different stenghts and weakness are a great feature of SMAC. Finally, SMAC has an epic dimension that lacks CTP, through those interlude texts, you really feel like you'r exploring an alien world, sad that those interlude are the same for all factions though.

Well, this is quite long. If you want it in brief : both games are good, but SMAC is GREAT!

The only one of these I don't have is CtP, and I can say that Smac is superior to Civ2 in many ways....but, it's just an opinion. Some swear by Civ2, but I just love Smac personally. It's not as popular in the mainstream, but I think it should be. Anyways, just wanted to drop a line here for all the Mac-Smac'ers..you're not alone! Though this whole forum is pretty dead. There's just not enough difference (thank goodness) between the PC version and the Mac to warrent it's own thread. Nuff said.
