Are the movement keys for the mac version (gold) configurable? I use a laptop...

Can I play without the CD in the drive?

Without the CD, absolutely! just do a Maximum install from the Custom Install menu. The game will play, but sans the music; I tire of the music anyway.

As for the keyboard...hmm, good question. Don't know. I have never had to map a Mac keyboard so I'm not sure how to do it! I'll browse through my Mac books and see what I find.

Edit: OHHH! I just reread the Thread Title! You don't own it yet! Well stop surfing and go buy it NOW! After giving the MPG book and game menus a quick look, there doesn't seem to be an easy way to reassign the keys. There are numerous single-key shortcuts in the game, and it would be hard not to interfere with them. I always move with the keypad, so I understand your problem. However, the number keys still function the same (1 on the top row and keypad both move units Southwest (diagonal, down left)), although it would take some time to get accustomed to moving that way. You can also move by mouse/touch pad.

Since I can't reconfigure the movement keys, I can't play this easily on my laptop. Maybe I'll buy the PC version for my PC desktop machine.

Oh well, there are plenty of other games out there.
      Thanks for your help.

Man I hate to hear that! Well, if I or anyone else figures out a way to deal with the keyboard we'll pop you a PM or an email. What you could do to checkout Civ2 is download the Civ2 demo at the MacSoft site. The regular Civ2 game differs only slightly from MPG and would give you an idea of how it would work on a laptop.

Well, I found out how to remap the keyboard (pretty easy with ResEdit), however, that would effect everything, not just Civ. However, I was thinking about QuicKeys and the possiblity of using it to make "shortcuts" specific to the game with a key combination that Civ doesn't use. Perhaps Control+ a set of nine key on the right side of the board. The shortcut would be something like Cntl+P = 7, and the other numbers to follow a similar patten. Thoughts?

BTW, I fished around in Civ2 with ResEdit and couldn't find the Resourse that specifies the commands to the keyboard.

Our main man Brian Nesse comes through again! Below is his email:

            quote:

... isn't really necessary. The PowerBook has a numeric keypad overlaid on
            the keyboard (over the 7, 8, 9, u, i, o, j, k, and l keys). You can access
them by using the "fn" key. It's not as nice has having a numeric keypad,
but it does allow you to use the movement keys.

Constantine the Great: did you see Brian's suggestion and did you buy the Mac version?
