Dutch are my favorite in this game. they get much more money from trade with europe than others.
and more money means more stuff to you.

English skill of 50% more crosses is also great, but I think that there is a limit to how quickly you can get those immigrant to the docks in europe. can anybody confirm this?
and you can compensate this english skill by building few cathedrals and hiring few preacherts.

Spanish skill of 50% attack bonus against the indians is nice, sure, but you get minus 4 points in the colonization score for every burned indian village, that isn't nice.

French skill of less indian alert is worth nothing if you trade with the indians.

EDIT: and BTW, Great thread idea! I was about to post thread about same subject.

I would have to agree with the vote for English. More people is always fun.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

            My favourite is The Dutch

Not only do they get the Merchantman instead of a caravel in the beginning (meaning more immigrants coming in the one voyage), I could land and set up shop in Argentina, buy silver from the Incas dirt cheap, and that would be the only source of funds I needed until I got all of my factories across the colonies built and populated. That would set me up for an easy war of independence.

On the higher difficulty levels I can't live without the French bonus - otherwise I end up with too much native restlessness. Any of the other civ's bonuses I can compensate for.

I always thought it was Dutch, hands-down. I mean, yeah, the English are okay, but a single fountain of youth neutralizes that pretty quickly.

I usually played the dutch as well.

Colonization is an excellent simulator of the real world, it seems: here, too, nobody cares for the French, and we all want to move to Amsterdam.

I liked the Dutch and the Spanish. The thing is, if as the Spanirds you begin away from the Incas or Aztecs, then you are really not going to do well. But if you land close to them, like in Argentina, then baby, 25000 gold from the Inca capital buys a heck of a lot of goodies.

It really does seem to depend where you land. I've tended to start in areas relatively dense with natives early on, which is perhaps why being the French has been so important to me (early conflict with natives = bad at higher levels.)

But you're right, if you land right near the Incas/Aztecs/Mayas being the Spanish might be better, and if you little early contact with either group of natives then the Dutch would probably be best.

I always played as the dutch or the french. I like the dutch for their free ship, or whatever it was. And I like the french for being french.

Are you all nuts? When you're the Spanish, you just get by even if you're not quite as great as the other powers until you get Cortes into the Congress and you find the Aztecs and/or Incas. Then send a Merchantman or Galleon full of Conscript Dragoons and start blitzing. You should rack in a TON of cash, more than enough to buy your way to whatever you want, and that is all you should need to put yourself to the win. English are OK, but as any other civ you can boost your immigration easily anyway.
