  • Just got the game, not bad, glad I got it. A few questions.

Just got the game, and I got to say, I like it. I am glad I got it. The game is more streamlined and it has a faster game play. Took me a while to get use to, but I like the changes.

I find researching tech every 4 or 5 turns a bit of a turn off, but I guess is it's just the begining of the game. I just researched currency. I just don't understand how I am in the industrial age yet.

I thought I would be turned off by the cartoonie graphics, but starting to like it now. My son just love how combat looks. One complaint I do have is the Mr Bean talk that all advisors and leaders do. Even my son dosn't like it lol.

All in all, I am glad I got it, and seem to be playing it more than Civ 4. Guess since there is no lag, the one more turn, just one more turn is back for me. Just hate how we all have to tweak Civ 4 to get it to play.

As others have said, I wish the games were larger, just find it a bit too small.

So here is my questions. How are the DLC? I got all the ones are for free, playing the game, so once I get use to it, I will get the DLC that I have to pay for.

The one with the Earth map, I see it's a MP game. Can I play this on SP as well? I don't have Live Gold so no MP for me, and don't plan on playing MP when I do have gold.

Are all the map sizes the same? I am thinking they are. No options for map size, and number of civilizations in the game, so I guess it's standard.

Is it always just one huge continent and small islands or is it mixed? I would like to be 2 continents so some naval warfare will happen. In my current game, I can't see no reason to have it.

Also what DLC do you suggest, and what should I stay away from?

Also any tips or suggestions you guys and gals have, I would love to hear them.

Glad you took the time to post!

I have my actual XBOX being fixed from the Red Rings of Death so am unable to play for at least another week.

I too have many of your same concerns.

Perhaps one day we will get a slightly more indepth game?

Please feekl free to post more and be involved as much as you feel the bidding to do so.

Maybe if you get the MP version we could hook up for a game, i have played many years of various online/PBEM PC civ games, but not yet on the CIVREV MP.

Keep the posts coming and Keep on Civin!

Nice to meet you Granpa troll. I don't have gold yet, I don't play MP, but maybe if I get into Civ Rev I might pick it up. Can we chat while playing MP? That would be a bonus. I am an old fart, almost 40, but playing games for over 20 years. I am not much of a MP person, more of a SP, but willing to try MP.

I hope you get your 360 back, when I had to give mine up, I went through withdrawl, so I sort of know what you are going through.

      Hope to see you soon.

      Davor

*edit* what is the Red Ring of Death? I had mine show a Red ring once, but never seen it again a few months ago. I have a DVD problem with my 360 now, where when I put a disk in, it dosn't see it, then give it a tap and it will read it then. So I am hoping my 360 dosn't go on the fritz, I am having fun with Civ Rev now.

        Well, welcome to old fartsville

        I'll pop 50 in a three months

The XBOX (im not sure which versions of XBOX) has a three year warranty for the three rings if it happens.

I too had the problems starting with VERY S-L-O-W reading of the games then came the rings..like POOF! over about three total weeks.

But when i get it back, would love to do some postings about gameplay.

Tell me, you have a certain civ you like the best?

        If so, why?

Myself, I love those Mogolians, due to the barbarian villages joing your civilization.

        Now tahts hard to overlook!

then i just stick about three archer armies in each city to start to defend them as sure I am posting here, the pleasurable part of CIVREV is the relentless AI attacks!

The era is advanced based on the number of techs you have not which specific ones, Medival starts at 5 techs, Industrial at 14 and Modern at 25.

Yes, the advisor and leader talk is really lame. If they didn't want to make them all talk english to make international marketing easier, then they should have made them talk each their real language -- that would have been educational

The small size is a "design feature" because it is for console, they do not expect people to keep playing a game for days, so they downsized everything to have the games playable ina few hours to end. Of course, real civ players like us all wish to have the options to make bigger maps. Let's hope they add some large maps as DLC someday...

I did not get any pay-for DLC either, so I can't talk about those. What I find fun is the "Game of the week" feature and the fact that there is a ranked list for each difficulty level.
The Chieftain level is fun puzzle how to do the fastest Horseman sweep -- usual best times are around 2300BC , there is a guy with user name Jou-Kan (sp?) who always does it 1-2 turns faster than I, and I can't figure out how he does that Then there is the more serious competition at Deity level. Last week I managed to do that at 600BC with a neat trick to get to Feudalism ultra-fast and win domination by Knight armies. But this week, the Deity level is real tough. You start from a small island as Indians, the big continent has French, Arabs, Russians and Japanese. By the time I got to them, they were all too strong to knock over with Knight armies. By the time i got tanks, the French almost won by culture victory. By the time I beat them, the Russians were nearing economic victory and the other two nations both finished the Space tech and started building the space ships for technology victory, I barely managed to rush the UN to win by culture myself. This was my first ever game against the AI that I almost lost at several points. I warmly recommend it!

Yes, seems to be the theme, although there are some variations ehere you need naval combat because the continent has some choke-point strongly defended and you have to get around. Plus, as I mentioned above this weeks "game of the week" starts on an island (not too small) so you'l have plenty of naval action in that one.

If you can get on MP, that is fun too. Because the game was made simple and short it is actually possible to have MP games that are short and punctual (no more than an hour or two, sometimes much shorter). Although I am playing on PS3, so we are not likely to meet. I think it is different for the two platform, because MP is organized by PSN and Xbox live, not Firaxis/Take2/EA.

Based on the results I see on MP leaderboard, the most powerful factions seems to be: Aztec, Japanese, Chinese. The auto-heal makes the Aztec very powerful in combat. The food-in-sea makes the Japanese capable of grow & research at the same time which puts them quickly in tech lead and then they can win by Samurai Knights (extra attack).

BTW, I am also past 40, so it seems these Civ games get more popular with age

Well zsozso, I think it's time you get a 360, and I will get live gold lol.

Well Grandpa Troll, let me know when you get your 360 back, and I might get live gold if I have the cash at the time.

Well I just finished my first Civ Rev game. Game was a bit boring after Liz declared war on me. Nobody else did. I guess its because I was on the easiest level so I can learn how the game works. I will be going up the next level, maybe 2 levels and see what happens.

Just need to say this. I think it was said in an ealier thread, but need to say it a bit differently. The game is made to be more streamlined. I and I like this. But is Sid and freaking idiot? I mean he makes the game more streamlined, faster to play, but why for the love of God, do I need to click on every unit in the same space? Why not say push down on left thumb stick to select same units in the same space, or push down on right thumb stick to select all unit in same space to move? That would really increase the speed of the game.

Also just when I want to click end turn, I don't want to go through every unit that is active.

Sorry for calling Sid an idiot but this is a big miss and should have been easily applied to the game.

While I agree that the option should exist for a larger map, the main draw, for me is the fact that it is a limited game that I can easily play in a couple of hours rather than the extend games in civ 4.

Sorry, but that's not likely to happen... Apart from the waste of money angle, I also have a fundamental aversion of that certain company in Redmond.
But I have a better idea: why don't you get a PS3 instead ? You don't have to pay any subscription online playing is free on PlayStation Network!

Believe me, I feel your pain! Furthermore, I have a bad news for you: it gets much worse in MP, because of the simultaneous moves. Typical scenario: you have a pack of units on invasion route to an enemy city, some attackers (e.g. catapult) some defenders (e.g. archers) and some spies. When you try to move them one-by-one the following suprises may happen:
                      1. Attacker moves first, then you find out enemy troops are standing adjacent to your target tile and your attacker gets killed before you can move a defender onto the tile
                      2. Defender moves first, but the target tile that seemed empty when you initiated the move suddenly has an enemy defender on it that you are now attacking with your defender and losing
                      3. You move several tiles along a road, but you unit gets attacked and killed in the middle of its move from a tile adjacent to the road
                      4. You are shipping several units and plan to land all your force within the turn, but your ship gets attacked along the path and all units killed before you get a chance to disembark the ship.

All these cases actually happened to me in MP games, so I am not making up these horror scenarios. And of course, when you are fighting a battle with two players having packs of units next to each other, who attacks whom is rather up to luck and a bit depends on fastness of your fingers too (being old does not help here). Once a battle starts between two units, you cannot move another unit until that battle finished (you have to watch the animation), then who gets to initiate the next one and with which unit of the pack on the square is rather questionable...

Moving all units from a square together would definitely be a very crucial improvement! Hey, Take2/Firaxis: are you listening ?

Well Zsozso I might take you up on that offer. Right now, we are looking for a blue ray player and is thinking of going the PS3 route just for that. If we get it, I will get CivRev to play you MP.

Well started a new game. I am on King I think, 3 from the easiest. This game is so much different from the easiest setting. I am liking what I am playing. I think I will be getting gold just to try out MP.

I just want to know, who is saying this game is dumbed down? I just realized a good reason for fast teching. Instead of making a no brainer in making a building with one or two choices, now I have like 10 buildings to make a decision or do I make troops? Yes some things are less decisions to make, but some are harder to make now. Well time for bed and will share some more stories later

Just rented this game for the first time and I'm loving it...and by loving it I mean becoming highly addicted to it. This is my first Civ game, and although I'm pretty much exclusively a console player (Xbox 360), I may have to try Civ IV eventually...

I love this game despite the few glaring issues a veteran player such as myself has with this short of a non-moddable game

Just keep in mind that Civ IV is totally different, slower pace, not as much action, and alot more choices, witch can be good things depending what kind of player you are.
