Whenever I play civ 3 the swap file grows and grows until it fills the hard drive although I have almost 500 megs available. I am pretty sure this is enough, isn't it? Is there a patch that fixes this rampantly growing swap file? Fortunately I haven't lost any games YET... but I would appreciate an answer, thanks.

This is a 'known' problem.
I think i have seen a swap file of 800meg !!!
after that i made a smaller fixed swap file.Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God? - Epicurus

Best advice (given what little you've said): Set a fixed swap file size of around double your physical memory, but no less than 256 and no greater than 512. Ideally, your swap file should be the first file on the drive and completely unfragmented. I usually create a separate partition just for the swap file.
